Rapid prenatal test for Down syndrome developed

Washington, Sept 19: Researchers at Stanford University have developed a method that might help give the results of pre-natal tests within just a few hours instead of two weeks, thus making the early detection of Down syndrome and other birth defects that involve an abnormal number of chromosomes possible.

Scientists in California reported the advancement and the report has been published in Oct. 1, 2007 issue of ACS’ journal Analytical Chemistry.

London, Sept.19: Scoring a duck in a cricket match would not merit much attention, but in England skipper Paul Collingwood’s case, it resulted in the media being all over him because his early dismissal against South Africa in a Twenty20 World Cup match was blamed on a visit to a strip club.

The 31-year-old father of one admitted that he went to a lap-dancing club in Cape Town in the early hours of Saturday morning. In less than 24 hours he was out for a duck against South Africa, reports The Daily Mail.

BSE Sensex crosses 16, 000 mark

Mumbai, Sep 19: The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) 30 share sensitive index (Sensex) crossed 16,000 mark at it’s opening on Wednesday. NSE Nifty also opened strong after strong global cues. After US Federal Reserve announced cut in key interest rate for the first time in four years, the bulls took charge of Indian Stock Markets.

The Sensex gained 405 points with no losers among the index stocks.

Maruti, HDFC and HDFC Bank gained around 4 per cent each to Rs 914, Rs 2,273 and Rs 1,278, respectively.

Britney Spears ordered to undergo drug tests, counselling sessions by Court

Washington, Sept 19: Britney Spears will have to undergo periodic random drug tests to convince the family court system that she is fit enough to take care of her kids.

Court documents show that the troubled singer will have to take two tests a week to ensure that she gets to keep joint custody of her young sons – Sean Preston and Jayden James.

UPA-Left Committee to meet again over Indo-US nuclear deal

New Delhi, Sept. 19: The United Progressive Alliance (UPA)-Left Committee on the Indo-US civil nuclear deal will meet here again today.

The meeting assumes significance in the light of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) asking the Centre on Tuesday not to operationalise the deal for at least six months.
