Rameswaram fishermen oppose Sethusamudram project

Rameswaram (TN), Sept 18: Fishermen in the coastal villages of Tamil Nadu’s Rameswaram District have opposed the Sethusamudram Ship Canal Project, claiming the livelihood of lakhs of fishermen is threatened by the project.
Fishermen say the ongoing work on the project is driving away fish, and fear that the ship traffic will only worsen things once the project is completed.

Later, Madhya Pradesh police arrested at least 13 protestors, armed with iron rods and sticks, who ransacked and shut the shop.

"Police cannot be everywhere all the time. As soon as we were informed of this incident, we rushed to the spot in five minutes, and arrested the people involved," said Manoj Rai, Additional Superintendent of Police, Indore.

Kolkata, Sept 18: Master blaster Sachin Tendulkar today wished the Indian team luck for the ongoing Twenty20 World Cup in South Africa, and hoped it would do well in the upcoming matches.

"I have been watching, it’s (Twenty20 format) fantastic. The team has done well. It is just the last match that wasn't the result we wanted, but the tournament is still wide open, and I am confident the team will do well," Tendulkar told reporters at a function to promote the Kolkata Open WTA event here.
