Kashmiri walnuts growers expecting a rewarding season

Jammu & KashmirSrinagar, Sep. 23 : With the plucking of walnuts in its final stage, growers of this delicious fruit in Kashmir region are anticipating a bumper yield this year.

The walnut growers here believe it would be a highly rewarding season this time Their hope is based on the good weather conditions witnessed here over the last few months.

Widely known for their superior quality and taste, Kashmiri walnuts hold a high demand in the markets in Jammu and Kashmir and in other States as well.

Two militants belonging to the Lashkar-e-Toiba (Army of the Pure), were killed in an encounter in the Bandipora district, some 25 kilometres north of state capital Srinagar.

"The gunbattle erupted on Tuesday morning after the security forces were attacked by rebels hiding in a house in the area," a local police officer said requesting anonymity.

The defence officials stated, "A group of armed militants entered the Indian Territory from Kabaristan post of Pakistan and were trapped by troops close to Kalash Indian Post between Zero line and border fencing along LoC in Poonch district on Sunday."

Baglihar dam displaced yet to be rehabilitated

Doda, Sept 21: With just a month is left for the commissioning of the first 150-mw unit of the Baglihar hydropower project in Jammu, residents in the dam''s catchment area complained that they were yet to be rehabilitated. However, officials refuted their claim.

The 450-megawatt Baglihar dam is being built on the Chenab river, which flows from Kashmir into Pakistan.

Over 15,000 families have to be rehabilitated before the dam is commissioned. People living in a 60-kilometre radius of the dam have to be relocated. But, many said they were yet to receive compensation for their land, which would be submerged.

Two militant hideouts busted by security forces in J-K

Jammu, Sept 21 : Security forces busted two militant hideouts and recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition from them in Poonch and Reasi districts of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday.
