Omar says situation in J-K not conducive for polls

Omar AbdullahNew Delhi, Oct 1 : National Conference (NC) president Omar Abdullah on Wednesday said that situation in Jammu and Kashmir is not conducive for holding assembly elections.

"The situation is not conducive for polls,” a news agency quoted Abdullah as saying and added that there was a deep polarisation of voters in Jammu and the feeling of alienation was very strong in the valley.

The NC has already conveyed to the Election Commission that for holding polls the ground situation must be conducive and the atmosphere must be peaceful to ensure all sections of people take part in the polls.

Kashmiri Nadrus are in high demand during Ramadan

One killed during protests in Indian Kashmir Srinagar, Sep. 29 : These days the Kashmir valley is witnessing a high demand for Nadru, the lotus stem, as during the holy month of Ramadan most of the devout Muslims, who remain on dawn to dusk fasts, relish it a lot.

Kashmiri Nadru (lotus stem), which are found beneath the water of Dal Lake and the Walur Lake, attract huge demand during this ongoing holy month.

Bland in taste with a texture somewhere between that of a potato and Sinagara(water chestnut), Nadru is rich in dietary fiber and vitamin C, among other nutrients, as well as low in fat.

Nine militants killed in Kashmir

Srinagar, Sept 29: The death toll today in the ongoing operation to track town militants in high-altitude areas of Kashmir valley has gone up to nine.

According to sources, two bodies of the two slain militants were recovered from Kangan, 40 km from Srinagar today.

The identity and group affiliation of the deceased are yet to be established.

The operation was launched on Thursday following information that a group of militants was moving from Bandipora to Kangan in Ganderbal district.

Nine militants, one soldier killed in Kashmir operation

Army monitors Jammu-Srinagar highwaySrinagar, Kashmir  - Indian security forces recovered bodies of two suspected Muslim militants Monday, taking the death toll to nine from an operation to hunt rebels in high-altitude areas of India-administered Kashmir, officials said.

A soldier from the Indian Army was also killed in the shootout in the Lanzkangan area, about 45 kilometres north of the state capital Srinagar.

India, Pak finalise modalities of LoC trade

India, Pak finalise modalities of LoC tradeMirpur (Pakistan), Sept 29: Modalities of trade between India and Pakistan to begin trade through Srinagar-Muzaffarabad and Poonch-Rawalakot routes have reportedly been finalized, official sources said.

The trade is scheduled to commence on October 21 on Srinagar-Muzaffarabad and on October 28 on the Poonch-Rawalakot route.

PoK Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Zulfiqar Abbasi, who will head a 21-member trade delegation to Kashmir from October 9, said that trucks would be allowed to go to the designated points on both sides of the LoC.
