Mars orbiter completes about 80 per cent of journey

Mars orbiterChennai: Inching closer to the red planet, India's ambitious Mars orbiter spacecraft has covered more than 540 million kilometres, about 80 per cent of its journey for its rendezvous with the planet scheduled for September 24.

The spacecraft has covered a distance of more than 540 million kilometres on its helio centric journey to the red planet, ISRO said today.

"Yes, that is very close to a whopping 80 per cent". Mars Orbiter mission and its payloads are in good health", ISRO said on its social networking site.

Indian Bank declares 47% dividend for 2013-14

Indian-BankChennai: Shareholders of public sector Indian Bank have approved final dividend of 47 percent for the year ending March 31, 2014.

A decision to this effect was taken at the bank's annual general meeting held in the city recently, Chennai-based Indian Bank said in a statement.

"Shareholders approved payment of dividend of 47 percent for the year 2013-14 of which bank has made payment of interim dividend of 30 percent on January 25, 2014," it said.

ISRO planning to launch French satellite SPOT 7 on June 26Chennai: ISRO is planning to launch its next rocket PSLV C23 carrying a French remote sensing satellite SPOT 7, along with four others from Sriharikota spaceport on June 26, a senior official said today.

"As of now, we have scheduled the launch of PSLV C23 at 9.50 am on June 26. A 52-hour countdown has been planned, which would commence at 6 am on June 24," the ISRO official told PTI.

Ford to make India its export hub: Alan MulallyChennai - Terming India among the fastest growing markets, US-based carmaker Ford today said it has decided to make the country as its export hub.

"We have decided that India will be an export hub for Ford. We are exporting to over 50 countries from here and are increasing it overtime," Ford Motor President and Chief Executive Officer Alan Mulally said.

Ford India has two manufacturing plants in the country - one in Gujarat and another at Maraimalai Nagar near here.

Daimler India enters Bangladesh market

daimler-trucksChennai: German commercial vehicle maker Daimler's Indian subsidiary has forayed into Bangladesh market by launching FUSO Trucks manufactured at its plant here, making it the sixth overseas destination.

Daimler India Commercial Vehicle, the Indian arm of Stuttgart-based Daimler AG, along with Daimler Group company Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation, launched FUSO Trucks, in Bangladesh making it as the sixth strategic market since beginning of exports in May 2013.

Trajectory correction of Mars mission likely by June 11

Mars-missionChennai: Indian Space Research Organisation is likely to perform its next trajectory correction manoeuvre on its Mars Orbiter mission on June 11.

As its Mars mission is "on intended track" and was proceeding towards the red planet with "good health," ISRO had earlier announced that the trajectory correction manoeuvre scheduled for April was not necessary and postponed it for this month.

"The mission is in good health and is on the intended track. We have planned the next trajectory correction manoeuvre of Mars mission on June 11. It is yet to be finalised," a senior ISRO official told PTI.

Ford India doubles its May sales

Ford India doubles its May salesChennai, June 2 : Car maker Ford India Monday said it sold 12,288 units last month, up from 5,993 sold in May 2013.

In a statement, the company said domestic sales stood at 6,053 units last month, up from 4,002 units sold in the corresponding period of the previous year.

The company exported 6,235 vehicles, against 1,991 units in the corresponding period last year.

TVS Motor logs sales growth in May

TVS-MotorChennai, June 2 : Two- and three-wheeler manufacturer TVS Motor Company Ltd. closed May with 27 percent sales growth, the company said Monday.

In a statement the company said it sold 210,293 units last month, up from 165,151 units sold in May 2013.

Total two-wheeler sales increased from 159,346 units in May 2013 to 201,234 units in May 2014.

Three-wheeler sales of the company grew from 5,805 units in May 2013 to 9,059 units in May 2014.(IANS)

Hyundai Motor's May sales down nine percent

Hyundai-MotorChennai, June 2 : Automobile manufacturer Hyundai Motor India Monday reported a fall of nine percent in its sales for May at 51,718 units from 56,856 units in the corresponding month of last year.

However, the company said its domestic sales during the month under review grew by 12.8 percent and stood at 36,205 units - up from 32,102 units sold in the corresponding month of 2013.

The company's exports last month crashed by 37.3 percent at 15,513 units - down from 24,754 units shipped out during the corresponding month of last year.

New government not challenge to operations: AirAsia

AirAsiaChennai, May 30 : Private airline AirAsia (India) Friday said there was no challenge in launching its domestic operation next month under the new central government despite BJP leader Subramanian Swamy opposing the licence granted to it.

"It (new central government) is no challenge to run our operations," AirAsia (India) CEO Mittu Chandilya told reporters here Friday.

Danfoss to set up 1 MW solar power project

DanfossChennai, May 27 : Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems global major Danfoss is setting up a 1 MW solar power plant at its upcoming facility in Oragadam, around 55 km from here, a senior company official said, adding the company will also expand its distribution network in smaller cities to cash in on the increasing demand for its products.

"The Rs. 6 crore solar power plant with a five-year pay-back will satisfy 10 percent of our energy needs. The project will go on stream when our new plant starts operations by September/October," Danfoss India president Ravichandran Purushothaman told IANS.

City Union Bank net increases by 8 percent

City-Union-BankChennai, May 26 : Private sector City Union Bank closed last fiscal with a 16 percent growth in its total income and eight percent rise in net profit, said a top official of the lender Monday.

Announcing the bank's financial results for the year ended 31 March 2014 here, N. Kamakodi, managing director and chief executive officer, said: "We closed last year with a total income of Rs. 2,847.13 crore up from Rs. 2,462.39 crore earned the previous year. The net profit grew to Rs. 347.07 crore from Rs. 322.02 crore in 2012-13."

He said the board has recommended a dividend of 100 percent for the year that went by.

On Friday, 39 members of the Lok Sabha will get elected from Tamil Nadu, while the remaining 806 candidates who had contested in the state will face disappointment.

Of the 55 million voters in the state, around 73 percent exercised their democratic right. Fifty five women and one transgender were among the contestants.

"We will now start looking at increasing our corporate or commercial lines of business (fire, transit, burglary and others) and also the health insurance. Currently only 10 percent of our business is from commercial lines," S. S. Gopalarathnam, managing director, told reporters here Tuesday.

Directed by Marc Webb, the movie hit the screens May 1 in India.

"The Amazing Spider-Man 2" grossed approximately Rs. 41.7 crore (approximately $6.92 million) in its four-day opening weekend.

According to Sony Pictures India, the film has registered the highest ever opening day gross for any Hollywood title in the country, the banner said in a statement.

TVS Motor to roll out bikes for BMW next year

TVS-Motor-BMWChennai, May 5 : Two- and three-wheeler maker TVS Motor Company will start rolling out bikes for German auto major BMW during the second half of next year, a top company official said Monday.

The company will also launch new products to fill up the vacuum in its product line-up.

Speaking about the tie-up with the German group, Venu Srinivasan, chairman and managing director of TVS Motor, told newsmen: "It will be ready in the second half of next calendar year. It will be brand new platform for the BMW."

Hyundai's May sales down 11.8 percent

HyundaiChennai, May 1 :  Automobile manufacturer Hyundai Motor India Thursday reported a fall of 11.8 percent in its total sales for April at 50,222 units from 56,953 units in the corresponding month of last year.

However, the company said its domestic sales during the month under review grew by 8.8 percent and stood at 35,248 units -- up from 32,403 units sold in the corresponding month of 2013.

The company's exports last month crashed by 39 percent at 14,974 units -- down from 24,550 units shipped out during the corresponding month of last year.

One reportedly dead, 14 injured in blast on train at Chennai Railway Station

blast on train at Chennai Railway StationChennai, May 1 - One person was reportedly killed and fourteen others were reported injured by an explosion in one of the coaches of the Bangalore-Guwahati Express that was stationed off platform number nine at the Chennai Central Railway Station here on Thursday.

Television reports said police teams have arrived at the spot to conduct an investigation as to what caused the blast on the train that was about to leave the station.
