Nungambakkam (Chennai) [India], Jan. 9 : Rohan Bopanna and Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan became the first Indian pair since 2011 to clinch the Chennai Open men's doubles title at the SDAT Stadium here last evening.

Bopanna and Nedunchezhiyan defeated fellow countrymen Purav Raja and Divij Sharan 6-3, 6-4 in the finals of the tournament to emulate Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi, who achieved the feat as many as five times.

Paes won the title one more time in 2012 but that was with a Serbian player, Janko Tipsaveric.

Some sort of doubles history was created even before the first ball was hit, as it was for the time in the Chennai Open's 22-year existence that four Indians featured in the summit showdown.

Chennai: After weeks of negotiations with employees agitating against suspension of operations at the Foxconn's Sriperumbudur plant, the electronic parts manufacturer said a severance agreement has been reached and the facility is closed down.

In a response to PTI query today, Foxconn said, "A settlement for severance was concluded with employee representatives on February 12, 2015 and based on that agreement, the last day of employment for all employees of FIH India Private Ltd was February 10."

"The company's facility in the Nokia Special Economic Zone, Chennai, officially closed its operations on February 10, 2015," it said.

Chennai , Feb 12 : Luxury car manufacturer Rolls Royce on Thursday officially launched its latest model, the Ghost Series II. With this, the Tamil Nadu capital has become the first city in South India where the car has been launched.

"Basically it's an evolution to Ghost Series I and there is quite a few changes to the car-exterior wise interior wise and also technology wise," said Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Ltd, Asia-Pacific, general manager Sven J Ritter, while launching the car.

He added that the super luxury car maker was yet to decide on entering the sports utility vehicle segment.

The Ghost Series II was launched in the rest of the country in November.

According to reports, India is one of the top five markets in Asia Pacific for the Ghost series. (ANI)

Jaitley hints at special steps to boost public spending

Arun JaitleyChennai: With one-and-a-half months left for the Budget, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Monday said the government will take "special steps" to boost public spending on infrastructure and initiate measures to rationalise subsidies.

"Even with the present constraint of fiscal deficit in revenue, it's a challenging and a difficult opportunity for us. But I think we have to take some special steps as far as public investments is concerned," he said.

The Minister underlined the need for stepping up public investments in infrastructure sector to boost economic growth.

Ashok Leyland sales jump 48% in December

Chennai - Auto major Ashok Leyland reported 48 percent jump in sales at 9,290 units in December 2014.

The Hinduja Group company had sold 6,275 units during the same month of 2013.

Sales of medium and heavy commercial vehicles soared 85 percent in December 2014 to 7,210 units as against 3,890 units sold during the same month of previous year, the Chennai-based automaker said in a statement.

On sales of light commercial vehicles, the company witnessed 13 percent decline in December 2014, to 2,080 units from 2,385 units sold in December 2013.

Foxconn India completes all production orders at Chennai unit

Chennai - Indicating that there were no more production orders for employees to work for at its Sriperumbudur unit near here, Taiwan-based electronics parts maker Foxconn on Thursday said it has completed them and all its employees were placed on "paid-holiday-leave" status.

"FIH Mobile confirms that employees at our India operation, FIH India Private Limited in Chennai, have been placed on paid-holiday-leave status from December 22 as that facility has completed all of its production orders", the Taiwan based firm said in a statement.

Tamil film director Rudraiya passes away

Chennai - Tamil film director C Rudraiya died here today after a brief illness.

67-year old Rudraiya was not keeping well and breathed his last at a private hospital here, sources close to his family said.

The director is most famous for his critically acclaimed 1978 film 'Aval Appadithan" (She Is Like That), a movie surrounding the trials and tribulations of a female protagonist, a single woman.

Starring Sripriya, Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth, the black and white film was hailed by critics as one ahead of its times then.

Rudraiya is survived by wife, son and daughter. (PTI)

Rajnikanth hints at entering politics

Chennai - Tamil superstar Rajinikanth tonight hinted that he may plunge into politics about which there has been speculation for a long time.

"I have been moving in the direction shown by God. If he desires that I should come to politics, I will serve the people," the 63-year-old actor said at the launch of the audio and trailer of his tri-lingual action-thriller 'Lingaa'.

"Politics is dangerous and deep. I am not afraid of politics, but hesitant. In politics you need strong roots," he added.

There has been speculation for years about whether the megastar would join politics as various political parties have been wooing him.

Countdown for IRNSS 1C launch commences at Sriharikota begins today

Chennai - The 67-hour countdown for the launch of India's navigation satellite IRNSS 1C, the third of seven satellites in the series to put in place India's navigation system on par with US' Global Positioning System, on board PSLV C 26 began Monday at the spaceport of Sriharikota.

Following the clearance from the Launch Authorisation Board (LAB) yesterday, the countdown commenced at 6.32 AM today as planned and was proceeding smoothly, ISRO said.

"The 67-hour countdown for the mission will commence at 0632 hrs IST on October 13," ISRO said.

ISRO to launch IRNSS 1C on Oct 10

ISRO IRNSSChennai: ISRO will launch the third of seven series of satellites to put in place India's own navigation system on par with US' Global Positioning System (GPS) from the spaceport of Sriharikota on October 10.

The launch has been scheduled at 1.56 AM on October 10, ISRO said today.

The IRNSS 1C satellite would be launched on the 28th flight of India's PSLV-C26 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota, some 100 km from here.

As part of its aspirations to build a regional navigational system equivalent to Global Positioning System of the US, ISRO plans to send seven satellites to put in place the Indian Regional Navigational Satellite System (IRNSS).

Indian Bank to revise interest rates from tomorrow

Indian-BankChennai: Public sector Indian Bank will revise its interest rates on the foreign currency non-resident (banking) term deposits from tomorrow.

"For FCNR (B) deposits, in USD, the revised interest rate has been revised to 2.34 percent (from 2.36) for deposits of one year and above but less than two years", the Chennai-based bank said in a statement.

For deposits of two years and above but less than three years, interest rates have been revised to 2.71 percent from the existing 2.76 percent.

India's Mars orbiter to reach red planet in 33 days: ISRO

India Mars orbiterChennai: India's ambitious Mars Orbiter Mission was just nine million kilometres away from the red planet, Indian Space Research Organisation said today.

"Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) is just nine million km away from Mars and 189 million kilometres away from the Earth. 33 more days to MARS," ISRO said in its social networking site.

Early this month, ISRO scientists ruled out Trajectory Correction Manoeuvre originally planned for August as the spacecraft was on track.

IOC to invest Rs 1,200 cr on LPG pipeline projects

Indian-Oil-CorporationChennai: State-owned Indian Oil Corporation has proposed to invest about Rs 1,200 crore during the current financial year for expanding its Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) pipeline projects.

"Recently, the Corporation has renewed focus on LPG pipelines so as to leverage the economics and safety aspects of LPG transport via pipelines. With increased LPG imports and significant evacuation through tankers, LPG piplines are in the next growth avenue," IOC said in its annual report.

Honda plans to export Mobilio to South African market

Honda-MobilioChennai: As part of its plans to sell over 9,000 units during the current financial year, automaker Honda Cars India would consider exporting its latest mid-size multi purpose vehicle Mobilio to South Africa, a top company official said today.

The Japanese carmaker had shipped about 6,000 units in the last financial year, Honda Cars India Senior Vice-President (Sales and Marketing), Jnaneswar Sen said.

"We are considering exports of Mobilio to South Africa. Last year, we made exports of 6,000 units. This year we have a target of 9,000 units", Sen told reporters here after launching Mobilio in the region.

61 Indians arrive from Iraq

Indians arriveChennai: Sixty-one Indian nationals hailing from Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday arrived here from Iraq following their evacuation from the strife-torn Gulf country.

The returnees, who were employed with various companies in Iraq, landed here on an Air India flight via Mumbai and were received by senior state government officials at the Anna International terminal, airport officials said.

About 36 of them hail from Andhra Pradesh while the rest are from Tamil Nadu, officials said, adding that all of them have left on the onward journey to their homes.--PTI

Nokia paid Rs 250 cr compensation under VRS to 5,600 employees

NokiaChennai: Finland-based Nokia has paid about Rs 250 crore as compensation to employees of its Chennai manufacturing facility, who opted for the voluntary retirement scheme offered by it in May, Tamil Nadu Industries Minister P Thangamani informed the state Assembly today.

"Soon after the Chennai plant was converted into contract manufacturing facility, as it was excluded from the Nokia-Microsoft USD 7.2 billion deal, the operations of the Chennai plant will be based on the supply orders. Because of this reason, the company (Nokia) offered VRS," he said.
