The British doctors have said that doctors helped a newborn baby boy avoid serious brain injury from lack of oxygen by giving him xenon gas to breathe, a medical first.

Newborn Riley Joyce was given a 50-50 chance of permanent injury and disability when he was rushed to St. Michael's Hospital, a university hospital in Bristol, England, unable to breathe properly.

A University of Southern California study has indicated that children who go to school near busy roads increase their risk of asthma 45 percent.

The Keck School of Medicine study published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives, said that attending school in high-traffic areas is almost the same as living near similar pollution sources, even though children spend only about a third of their waking hours at school.

Many U. S. adults are confused regarding the difference between food allergies and celiac disease, a U. S. survey has indicated.

S. adults, conducted by Harris Interactive for HomeFree, makers of organic, whole-grain cookies free of common food allergens, that only 3 percent identified all four common food allergens -- nuts, dairy, eggs and wheat. Forty-three percent incorrectly identified gluten as an allergen.

They are testing a viral therapy for a lethal lung cancer, U. S. researchers have said.

According to the reports, researchers at the Cancer Therapy & Research Center at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio have begun enrolling up to 55 patients with squamous non-small cell lung cancer for a clinical trial of the viral treatment, Reolysin, used in combination with two chemotherapy drugs.

Dr. Alain Mita said in a statement, "The study offers new hope for this group of patients with lung cancer."

The U. S. Department of Commerce said on Friday that U. S. wholesale inventories rose 0.6 percent in February from January while sales rose 0.8 percent.

It was further reported by the department that from a year ago in February inventories fell 7.4 percent while merchant wholesale sales were up 9.8 percent.
