Russian, 118, is likely world's oldest person

RussiaMoscow- A 118-year-old man from the semi-autonomous Russian republic of Dagestan in the North Caucasus is probably the world's oldest person, according to local authorities Monday.

Magomed Labazanov, who was born on May 1, 1890 and is from Novoserebryakovka, would enter the Guinness Book of Records, RIA Nowosti news agency reported quoting a spokesman for the local council as saying.

Labazanov had more than 20 grand-children and great-grandchildren and put his ripe old age down to a healthy lifestyle complete with curd products, corn and wild garlic. He was a teetotaler and had never smoked.

Last summer, the world's officially oldest man, Japanese national Tomoji Tanabe celebrated his 112th birthday in Miyakonojo.

A 115-year-old US woman Edna Parker is the world's oldest person, according to the Guinness Book of Records. (dpa)
