After ICL it’s now APL!

Indian Cricket League After Indian Cricket League (ICL), it's now the turn of American Premier League (APL) which is giving sleepless nights to the ICC.

In order to counter the popularity of unauthorized APL in US, ICC principal adviser IS Bindra has urged the United States Cricket Association to develop a T20 tournament on the lines of the IPL. APL is all set to roll out in October.

Speaking on this, Bindra said, "I feel that regulation is not the only way to curb unapproved ventures. You need to have a successful alternative, too, like how the BCCI developed its Premier League as a viable model (to the ICL)."

He further added that ICC has advised cricket officials in US to install an IPL model to capitalize on the Twenty20 boom.

It may be recalled that Bindra had been given the task of developing the game in the grassroots level in the US. A large number of immigrant Indian, Pakistani and West Indian people are living in United States.

"There have been some ad-hoc attempts to organize some leagues and events in the US, but none of them happened on an official platform and were poorly planned efforts", added Bindra.

Only last month, the American Sports and Entertainment Group announced the launch of the APL, with players drawn from major cricketing nations and especially those signed by the unauthorized Indian Cricket League (ICL). Moreover, the first edition of the APL would be held in New York in October. A rich businessman Jay Mir has signed up Sir Richard Hadlee as consultant and former players like Inzamam-ul-Haq and Graeme Hick for a six-team league.
