Sonia Gandhi to address public meeting in Gujarat

Congress Party President Sonia GandhiNew Delhi, Dec 4: Congress Party President Sonia Gandhi will address a public meeting in Gujarat today as a part of her party campaign for phase one election for which voting is scheduled to be held on December 11.

Sonia will address a public meeting at Gandhidham, a city in the Kutch district this afternoon. Congress candidate V.K Humbel is contesting against his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rival Dr. Mrs. Nima Acharya.

Tight security arrangements have been made in view of her visit.

UPA Chairperson recently in a poll campaign in Gujarat attacked the BJP on various issues, particularly for its alleged failure to tackle terrorism.

"It is under BJP in whose rule at the Centre (BJP-led NDA Government) the terrorists attacked the Raghunath Temple and Parliament," she said.

She reminded how the then foreign minister of the BJP government escorted terrorists held in Indian jails to Afghanistan in lieu of the passengers of the IC 814 flight, which was hijacked.

After the communal riots in the year 2002, Chief Minister Narendra Modi had won the 2002 elections from Maninagar constituency.

The BJP managed to win 127 seats, while the Congress party was able to win only 51 seats in the 2002 Gujarat Assembly polls. The Janata Dal (United) and independents won two seats each.

Over 36 million voters will elect the 182-member Assembly in Gujarat in a two-phased election, as the term of the State's Legislative Assembly is due to expire on December 26.

The first phase of elections in Gujarat will be held on December 11 and second phase on December 16. The counting of votes will take place on December 23. (ANI)
