Security beefed up along Indo-Bangla borderSiliguri, Sept 26 : In the wake of recent militant attacks, security has been beefed up along the highly vulnerable Indo-Bangladesh border as additional paramilitary troopers and security personnel have been deployed to prevent trans-border infiltration and crime.

India shares a 4,096-km long border with Bangladesh. Of this West Bengal shares the longest border of approximately 2,216-km, most of which is porous, unfenced and prone to frequent skirmishes and infiltration.

India to open two more consulates in US

Manmohan Singh, Sarah PalinWashington/New York, Sept. 26 : India will open two more consulates in the United States as part of a bilateral and diplomatic exercise to enhance existing ties between the two countries.

Disclosing this to the Indian media team accompanying Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on his ten-day visit to the United States and France, Foreign Secretary Shiv Shanker Menon said that the consulates would be opened in Seattle in Chicago and in Atlanta in Georgia.

Dalai Lama resumes sermons, to visit Japan in November

New Delhi - The Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, who lives in exile in India, has recovered from a bout of ill health and has resumed his preaching sessions, an aide said Friday.

The Dalai Lama, 73, made his first public appearance after a month at a teaching ceremony on Thursday at McLeodganj near Dharamsala, the northern Indian hill town where he is based along with the Tibetan government-in-exile, his secretary Tenzin Takhla said.

The Tibetan leader had complained of fatigue and had been advised rest by his doctors after a series of medical tests in August. He has stayed confined to his residence since August 28 and scheduled trips to Europe, Mexico and the Dominican Republic were cancelled.

Climate, security, stability to dominate EU-India summit

Brussels - Global warming, global security and the global financial crisis are set to top the agenda when the European Union and India hold their annual summit in Marseille, France on Monday.

According to the French government, which currently holds the EU's rotating presidency, the summit is set to agree an "action plan" on cooperation in peace and security issues, sustainable development, science and technology and "person-to-person contacts".

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and top EU officials are also set to sign a deal paving the way for cooperation on civil aviation and discuss trade relations.
