Diwali brings a wave of cheer for potters in LudhianaLudhiana, Oct. 20  Diwali, the biggest festival of lights, is a day when all Hindu families celebrate the return of Lord Rama from 14-year exile to Ayodhaya, his kingdom, as mentioned in Ramayana. It is said people lit earthen lamps using Ghee, clarified butter.

Since ancient time, the devotees of Lord Rama lit earthen lamps, called Diyas in local parlance, and celebrate Diwali.

The tradition has been to light earthen lamps which is considered auspicious.

Sikh history traces these celebrations way back to the 17th century. It was during the reign of the Mughal emperor Jahangir when they got into conflict with Sikhs.

Himachal villagers organize Buffalo fights

shimlaBhont (Shimla), Oct. 20 : Thousands of people converged on the weekend at Bhont Village near Shimla for the traditional buffalo-fight fair. The rural folk of Himachal organize it as an annual ritual.

The fair showcased the traditional religious beliefs prevailing in rural areas. Over 25 buffalo from the different villages were brought for the buffalo fight here

"This fair holds historical importance. We have been celebrating this fair here for over 90 years. We believe that this fair helps to protect the people from bad omens," said Baldev Thakur, the village head of Bhont Village.

Supreme Court says doctor can be prosecuted if wrong treatment kills patient

New Delhi, Oct 20 : The Supreme Court has ruled today that a doctor can be prosecuted for causing death due to rash and negligent act if his patient dies after being administered wrong injections.

But the doctor cannot be prosecuted for “culpable homicide not amounting to murder” which entails a higher punishment, a bench of Justices C K Thakker and D K Jain ruled.

The bench passed the ruling while partly allowing the appeal filed by a doctor who challenged the summons issued by a trial court for prosecuting him under Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) in connection with the death of a patient.

Law Minister wants primacy of CJI in judicial appointments

The Supreme Court of IndiaNew Delhi, Oct 20 : Law Minister H R Bhardwaj has said that he stood for the primacy of the Chief Justice of India and the Chief Justices of High Courts in the appointment of judges.

“I am for restoration of primacy of the Chief Justice of India in the Supreme Court and the Chief Justice of High Courts in the High Courts,” Bhardwaj said.

“There is no provision in the Constitution to bring in other people,” he added.
