Pakistan establishes Benazir Bhutto Human Rights Fund

Benazir BhuttoIslamabad, Dec. 20 : Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has announced the establishment of a human rights fund for the protection and promotion of human rights in the country.

The Benazir Bhutto Shaheed Human Rights Fund will be set up with an initial amount of 10 million rupees, Gilani said.

He also said that five civil awards will be given to outstanding performers in the field of human rights.

Two of these awards will be given to human rights organisations and remaining three to human rights activists every year.

Jamaat-ud-Dawa’s welfare activities will not be blocked: Pak PM

Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza GilaniIslamabad, Dec 16 : Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani told the National Assembly that the Jamaat-ud-Dawa, the Lashkar-e-Taiba frontal organisation's, `welfare activities' would not be blocked, as thousands of people are benefitting from them.

Gilani added that the Pakistan Government would now monitor these activities.

Zardari, Gilani vow to safeguard country’s defence

Asif Ali Zardari, Yousuf Raza GilaniIslamabad, Dec. 15 : Pakistans's President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani here on Monday expressed their resolve to safeguard the country's defence and security and that Pakistan will itself investigate the elements posing threats in this regard.

Earlier, the Prime Minister held an important meeting with the President here at Aiwan-e-Sadar where Advisor to Prime Minister on National Security Mehmood Ali Durrani was also present.

Pakistan questions terror suspects, air forces on alert

Yousaf Raza GilaniIslamabad - Pakistan's prime minister Wednesday said the two top leaders of an Islamic militant group that India believes was behind the November 26 terrorist attacks in Mumbai were being questioned by police.

Yousaf Raza Gilani said Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi and Zarar Shah, were detained in a raid this week at the offices of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).

According to Indian officials, the lone surviving attacker in the Mumbai siege, which left 172 people dead and more than 300 injured, had identified LeT chief Lakhvi as the mastermind.

Gilani confirms arrest of two Lashkar members

Yousaf Raza GillaniMultan, Dec. 10 : Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani confirmed on Wednesday that two senior members of Lashkar-e-Taiba have been arrested.

"The two have been arrested and an investigation is under way," the Dawn quoted Gilani as telling journalists in response to a question about Lashkar members Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi and Zarar Shah.

Gilani said the two, who are both senior members of the banned group, were being questioned.

Pak PM cancels Hong-Kong trip

Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza GilaniPakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has cancelled his four-day visit to Hong Kong as he continued with his deliberations with political leaders over the fallout of Wednesday's Mumbai attacks, an official said.

Gilani was scheduled to leave for the Asia meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative, which is starting Tuesday.

The prime minister cancelled his trip in the wake of the situation emerging from the terrorist strikes in Mumbai, Zahid Bashir, press secretary of the Pak PM said.
