Study Links High Starch Vegetables to Weight Gain

Eating at least seven daily portions of fruit and vegetables can help to stay protected from some life-threatening diseases and also keep a watch on weight, suggests a study conducted by a team of researchers from Harvard.

People aiming to lose weight while still eating healthy might look towards vegetables, such as corn and peas, but as these vegetables are high in starch they might not be the best route.

The study researchers found that non-starchy vegetables such as broccoli and cabbage might actually help with weight loss, as the team found that as the consumption of such vegetables rose, the risk of excessive weight gain reduced.

U46 Schools to Remain Closed As District Works To Complete Cleaning Process of Cooling Towers

Elgin School District U46 officials have said that Eastview Middle School, Larkin High School and the Educational Services Center, high schools and the Central Schools Program will remain closed on September 24, as the district will complete the cleaning of the cooling towers for three sites.

Officials said that except the three sites all the other U46 schools and facilities will remain open. CEO Tony Sanders, said, “We are keeping these three buildings closed in an abundance of caution. We have absolutely no evidence that our students have been exposed to anything harmful. We expect to reopen these sites Friday after we repeat the cleaning process”.

Fidgeting While You Work May Help Reduce Negative Effects of Long Sitting Jobs

Researchers, through a new study, have suggested that fidgeting while work may help to reduce the negative health effects of sitting for long hours. Findings of the study were published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

The study researchers in Britain studied the data collected from 12,000 women who were asked to answer questions about their diets, alcohol intake, exercise habits, fidgeting and many other lifestyle habits.

The participants were also asked information about their health and body weight. The team was also informed about any participants who died during the course of the study. At the end of 12 years, the team looked for any relationships between the variables.

Number of Deaths Due To Contaminated Cucumber Rise to Three

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that the total number of deaths due to salmonella outbreak linked to Mexican cucumber has grown to three across the nation.

The CDC reported Tuesday that the number of cases of Salmonella Poona linked to ‘slicer’ cucumber supplied by Andrew & Williamson Fresh Produce of San Diego has increased by a third to 558 since last week.

According to the distributor, the cucumbers were distributed in 24 states, but 33 states have reported salmonella cases linked to the vegetable. Out of the total reported illnesses, almost 20% have occurred in California, but eight states have had more than 20 cases each, the CDC said.

Both sides allege publicity playing role in wave of felony marijuana charges

On Friday, the Department of Law filed a draft of felony charges against three businesses, and that too when the state is only two months away from finishing regulations for Alaska’s commercial marijuana sales.

The court will decide whether the three operators have broken the law by selling marijuana in the last few months or not. However, both sides have alleged that publicity is playing a part in the cases.

The department has filed 16 felonies and six more misdemeanors against Anchorage-based Alaska Cannabis Club and Absolutely Chronic Deliveries Company, and also Discreet Deliveries, which has a number of locations from Fairbanks down to the Kenai Peninsula.

Falls Prevention Awareness Day to be hosted on September 25 at Shepherd Center

The Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) and the Shepherd Center are going to host Falls Prevention Awareness Day on Friday, September 25 at the Shepherd Center. They will provide free health screenings, fall risk assessments and fall prevention demonstrations, along with a free lunch for the audience. The event is free and open to the public.

September 25 is the 8th Annual National Falls Prevention Awareness Day. Take a Stand to Prevent Falls is the theme this year. Among adults of 65 years of age and older, falls are the main cause of both fatal and non-fatal injury.

Recent studies have suggested that falls may lead to some symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. However, falls are not an unavoidable part of aging.
