Orthostatic Hypotension Often Starts with Delayed Syndrome

A 10-year-long study of patients at an institution has indicated that delayed orthostatic hypotension (DOH) is an earlier, milder form of orthostatic hypotension (OH). Study data showed that over a decade follow-up, 54% of patients having DOH progressed to OH and that a 10-year mortality of patients who progressed to OH was 50%, Christopher H.

The research was reported online by Gibbons, MD, of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School in Boston, and colleagues in Neurology.

The investigators said the rise in mortality in individuals with DOH was linked to abnormalities in baseline autonomic test outcomes, progression to OH, the presence of diabetes, and an alpha-synucleinopathy development.

26-year-old Paralyzed Man takes first steps using brain-power

According to a report in the Journal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation, a 26-year-old man, who can’t take steps due to an injury five years ago, was able to walk with the help of his brain-power.

This is for the first time ever when a person, who couldn’t walk because of a spinal cord injury (SCI), has firmly operated a non-invasive brain computer interface (BCI) system for over-ground walking in real time. This instance has given a hope for the possibility of developing BCI brain implants to help out SCI people in walking.

Defects in Liquid Crystals could be used as Templates for creating Nanomaterials

According to reports, scientists have found that liquid crystals defects could be used as templates for assembling molecules into accurately defined 3-D nanoscale structures. Their work has been published in the September 21 edition of the journal Nature Materials.

According to Nicholas Abbott, the John T. and Magdalen L. Sobota Professor and Hilldale Professor of chemical and biological engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, "It's a demonstration of principle. What one can imagine is using defects in liquid crystals to assemble molecules into a range of useful structures, including channels that could facilitate the transport of other molecules, like nanoscopic tubes”.

Deaths of Walrus carcasses found on northwest Alaska beach appear to be natural, says FWS

Previous week, dead Walrus carcasses were discovered on a northwest Alaska beach, and according to the US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), their deaths seemed to be natural. They were found near Point Lay, the same place where 35,000 walrus were spotted on shore September 2.

In a press release on Thursday, the agency said that an employee of the US Geological Survey gave an image of the walrus carcasses. The service mentioned that it has been analyzing the photo to find out whether the carcasses were new or old, and attempting to determine an age range of the walruses. After it, an investigator will have to give a confirmation onsite.
