Elgin School District U46 buildings shut after discovery of legionella bacteria all set to reopen Monday

On Sunday, an infectious disease specialist at Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin confidentaly said that there is almost no risk of infection from legionella bacteria that was discovered in cooling towers, forcing 3 Elgin School District U46 buildings to shut last week.

District officials has said that testing of the systems in the coming time will be planned prior to the starting of the school year to prevent a recurrence of the events due to which 3 buildings remained closed for three days.

On Monday, Eastview Middle School in Bartlett, Larkin High School in Elgin and the Educational Services Center that houses two alternative secondary programs, also in Elgin, will reopen.

Shigellosis cases spike in Kansas City

After a big spike in cases of an infectious diarrheal disease, Kansas City, Missouri, health officials have urged residents to take precautions. According to the city's health department, generally, about 10 Shigellosis cases are reported in a year in Kansas City, but over 150 cases have been reported so far in 2015. Most of the cases were reported from children in day care and elementary schools.

A group of bacteria called Shigella leads to Shigellosis. Between January 1 and July 1, 16 cases were reported but since July, over 134 additional cases have been reported. A spokesman for the Kansas City, Missouri Health Department said the reasons for the spike are yet unclear.

Gene-activity Test decides who Can Skip Chemotherapy

A study has suggested that a number of women who are at early-stage breast cancer can skip chemotherapy without affecting their chances to get rid of the disease. The study has shown that gene-activity test is going to play a major role in identifying a patient’s risk.

During the study, women who were allowed to skip chemotherapy, based on the gene-activity test, had about 1%, or less, chances cancer recurring far away within the next 60 months. Joseph Sparano, Doctor at Sparano of Montefiore Medical Center in New York and lead author of the study, said results of the study were amazing, and there can’t be anything better than that.

Roche’s Atezolizumab could be beneficial for Lung, Bladder Cancer Patients

Swiss global health-care company Roche announced that its new immune-system boosting cancer drug, atezolizumab, could soon win regulatory approval as the drug has given positive results in tests. On Sunday, the company released data at the European Cancer Congress in Vienna and said that the drug could help people suffering from lung and bladder cancers.

Sprint To Sit Out In Coming Auction of Wireless Airwaves

Sprint Corp, the American telecommunication holding company unveiled its plans not to participate in a coming auction of wireless airwaves. As per the company, the decision will help it save billions of dollars but could deprive its network of upgrades in the future.

The Federal Communications Commission has scheduled the auction for March 2016. The US government is planning to buy airwaves from TV broadcasters that it will then resell to wireless carriers.

Sprint on Sunday said that its airwaves at present are sufficient enough to provide its current and future customers great network coverage. The US wireless carrier said it will commence another major network which it says will improve the data speeds.

Facebook to Assist In Bringing Internet to Refugee Camps

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg promised that his company will make every possible effort to make internet accessible to refugee camps. Recently while speaking at the United Nations Private Sector Forum, Zuckerberg said Facebook would work with the intergovernmental body to make the internet available to those who wouldn't be able to use it.

The New York Times reported that Zuckerberg also noted that if more people will be online it will be beneficial to Facebook itself. But Zuckerberg didn’t tell how and when internet was coming to the refugee camps.

“It's one thing to say we should connect the world. The real trick is how. There's no simple solution or silicon bullet”, Zuckerberg acknowledged.
