Seven new Legionnaires’ cases reported in Bronx

According to reports, on Monday, officials said seven people in the Morris Park area of the Bronx suffer from Legionnaires’ disease. This points to need of an investigation into the possible source of the disease.

According to Dr. Jay Varma, deputy commissioner for disease control at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, all seven patients were having underlying medical conditions and have been hospitalized.

Dr. Varma said the cluster of cases was not linked to the disease’s outbreak in July and August that took 12 lives and sickened over 120 people in the South Bronx.

According to a study done on 50,000 people aged between 40 and 69, some people’s genetic make-up proved helpful in cutting the risk of contracting some of the most notorious smoking-related diseases.

During the study smokers and non-smokers as well as those suffering from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and those without it, were examined by researchers. They then did a comparison between these characteristics and a stunning 28 million genetic variants in each of the 50,000 subjects.

UK Surgeons begin stem cell trial aimed to cure blindness

A pioneering human embryonic stem cell operation has been carried out by Surgeons in London, as a part of an ongoing trial to find a cure for blindness for many patients. They performed the procedure on a woman aged 60 at Moorfields Eye Hospital.

The procedure included ‘seeding’ a small patch with specialized eye cells and its implantation at the retina’s back. The London Project to Cure Blindness was established 10 years back with an aim to reverse vision loss in patients suffering from age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

The procedure is going to be performed on 10 patients, having the wet form of AMD. All of them have suffered a sudden vision loss due to defective blood vessels in the eye.

-$3.3 million awarded by national wildlife group to deal with decline of monarchs

A national wildlife group gave $3.3 million in grants on Monday in order to help tackle the alarming decline of monarch butterflies. The group hopes that this initial push by it will assist in restoring up to 33,000 acres of habitat for monarch butterflies.

The 22 grants that the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation announced, would be matched by over $6.7 million from the recipients, in over a dozen states and among 115 applicants for finances in the conservation effort that was launched earlier this year.
