Stranding Of Guadalupe Fur Seals along California Coast Puts PMMC Officials on Alert

A study by researchers from the University of Georgia has found that genomes of snake species, including constrictor and the king cobra, include genes for limbs. According to the study, snakes still have DNA crucial to limb development lurking in their genomes.

Kim Cooper, a biologist at University of California, San Diego, and expert in genetics of limb development, said, "Developmental biologists are only beginning to understand how complex are the instructions for gene expression. Does each gene have a different enhancer for each place and time in development, or are some enhancers read again and again".

First glimpse of comet 67P’s dark side shown by Rosetta

Since August 2014, European Space Agencies' Rosetta spacecraft has been surveying an odd double-lobed comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko with a motive to collect data regarding the surface and the environment of the comet.

For a long time, the spacecraft has failed in reaching the dark and cold regions across the south pole of the comet, but now Rosetta has finally accessed this isolated place and has give the first peek at comet 67P's dark side. Rosetta's Optical, Spectroscopic, and Infrared Remote Imaging System (OSIRIS) captured the image.

Liquid Water flowing on Mars discovered

An epic discovery has been made by NASA. The US space agency announced on September 28 about the discovery of liquid water flowing on Martian surface. The water is saline and the discovery has been made under specific atmospheric temperatures.

The discovery was possible because of Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO), a satellite equipped with imaging spectrometry. The MRO first observed the water in 2010 and clicked images of flowing hydrated salts.

Study's lead researcher Lujendra Ojha of the Georgia Institute of Technology was of the view that the water was moving down during warm seasons and still in colder seasons. It is quite difficult to find liquid water on Mars because of severely low pressure atmosphere.

Megatsunamis are real: Study

Scientists have affirmed that megatsunamis are a reality. They shared such an event that took place 73,000 years ago. At that time, a large slope from the volcanic island Fogo in the Cape Verde islands off the coast of Africa fell in the ocean and led to a tsunami capable of moving mountains.

Study's lead researcher Ricardo Ramalho explained, "You're displacing a huge mass, which must generate movement of water. And in the case of volcanic flank collapses they can be very acute, because you have all the mass collapsing basically into the oceans".

Blue Whales use foraging methods to maintain their massive sizes

The NOAA Fisheries, West Coast Region, has shed light on as to how blue whales maintain their huge size. As per them, whales, the largest creatures on earth, maintain their gigantic size through ultra-efficient foraging methods.

As per the researchers, the foraging methods must use the energy that whales gain by eating krill while conserving oxygen during dives. Study researchers have affirmed that foraging methods are more complex that what were being considered before.

The researchers have tagged blue whales and came to know that they target the densest, highest-quality prey, allowing them to maximize their energy gain.

Bristol-Myers Gets Lead over Competitors Testing Combination Drugs to Fight Cancer

The first-ever combination of breakthrough drugs to fight cancer has received final approval. These combination drugs are said to boost the immune system and help in fight against cancer. The approval has given Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. an early lead over competitors testing other combos in a pharmaceutical gold rush of sorts.

Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. announced on Thursday that FDA has approved the use of its drugs Yervoy and Opdivo for the treatment of advanced melanoma, a deadly form of skin cancer.

The trials showed that together, the drugs slowed or temporarily stopped tumor progression in 60% of patients, as compared to 11% who receive Yervoy. The findings were received in a key study of 140 previously untreated patients with melanoma, the deadliest skin cancer type.
