New Moms have IUD Option Immediately after Giving Birth: Study

A new study has found thatintrauterine device (IUD) option has become available right after giving birth for new mothers in the United States who are covered with government-sponsored health insurance.

Dr. Michelle Moniz, researcher from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and lead author of the study, said, “Immediate insertion is associated with more women who want an IUD implant actually getting it, higher use at three months postpartum, and lower rates of unplanned rapid repeat pregnancies within 12 to 24 months of delivery”. It has been found that the strategy is cost-effective, Moniz added.

Most US Hospitals lack in supporting new moms who want to breastfeed

Researchers mentioned in the journal Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report on Tuesday that most hospitals in the US are still not able to provide good job in helping new moms who want to do breastfeeding.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), leading national public health institute of the US, surveyed more than 80% centers where birth takes place to find out the help they give to new moms in breast-feed. Only 5 out of 10 practices suggested by the World Health Organization are implemented by the centers, as per the survey. Six months is the apt duration that is required to be most nourishing for babies.

Ants have ability to form life rafts from their bodies

A great trick is being used by fire ants to increase their water repellency. The researchers said that in water, the ants join their bodies, which increases their water repellency. But a single fire ant struggle in the water.

Study researchers said ants do have a water repellent outer covering, but by joining the group can float effortlessly for many days. In order to build waterproof rafts, the ants link their bodies. They do so by using their mandibles, claws, and the adhesive pads present on the ends of their legs to hold each other.

Tim Davis, an entomologist and Clemson University senior extension agent, said, "While it sounds like something out of a horror movie, the technique by fire ants has been used for eons to escape flooding and migrate long distances".

Hog-nosed Shrew Rat discovered in Indonesia

An international team of researchers has discovered hog-nosed shrew rat having extra long pubic hair. It was discovered in remote, mountainous north peninsula of Sulawesi Island, Indonesia. The rodent was earlier unknown to science.

In early 2013, the rat was found in a trap on Mount Dako. Kevin Rowe of Museum Victoria said that at first glance only they knew that the creature was new. The rat has big, hog-like nose, long hind legs, flappy ears and stocky body and long pubic hair.

Nobel Prize in Physics Awarded For Discovering Neutrinos Have Mass

Arthur B. McDonald of Queen's University in Canada and Takaaki Kajita of the University of Tokyo were awarded Nobel Prize for making a groundbreaking discovery in physics.

The prize committee announced the names of the winners on Tuesday. The project led by the Canadian scientists, deep inside a nickel mine near Sudbury, Ontario, was assisted by the University of Pennsylvania.

The team including several hundreds of researchers and technicians included more than a dozen from Penn. These researchers helped design and develop high-tech particle detectors and also analyzed the results.

The findings collected by both the Canadian and Japanese groups revealed that neutrinos, which were earlier thought to be mass-less, actually have some mass.
