SC to hear December 16 gangrape convicts' plea today

New Delhi [India], Oct 24 : The Supreme Court will on Monday hear an appeal filed by December 16 Nirbhaya gangrape convicts - Akshay, Vinay Sharma, Pawan and Mukesh.

They had challenged their death sentence awarded by the Delhi High Court in the apex court.

The top court had on April 4 begun final hearing of the convicts' appeal almost two years after staying their execution.

Two of the four death-row convicts had written to Chief Justice T S Thakur and Justice Deepak Misra, stating that they do not approve of the defence counsel appointed by the court to argue their case before the top court as they had given statements against them to the media in the past.

The trial court had in September 2013 awarded death sentences to the convicts.

Congress blames BJP for rift in SP

Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) [India], Oct. 24 : The Congress Party on Monday blamed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for creating tension between other parties to hide their own inability.

"The way the BJP is trying to break the Samajwadi Party through Amar Singh is worth criticising. The BJP is somewhere trying to hide their inability by creating a rift between the parties," Congress spokesperson Surender Rajput told ANI.

Rajput said the Congress is not concerned about the Samajwadi Party's internal matters, but advised Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav utilise the remaining time of his government to do some productive work.

BJP says Mulayam responsible for Samajwadi Party rift

Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) [India], Oct.24 : A senior spokesperson of the Uttar Pradesh unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), I P Singh, on Monday held Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav responsible for the political crisis in the party.

"We can see that now the future of Mulayam Singh's political career has ended. The latest political crisis in Samajwadi Party is due to Mulayam Singh Yadav. He has signed his own political death warrant," Singh told ANI.

On Sunday, after being expelled from the cabinet, Samajwadi Party state president Shivpal Yadav expelled party general secretary Ram Gopal Yadav from his position and the party for six years.
