Germany cancel training after death of keeper Enke

Bonn - The German national team cancelled training Wednesday following the death of goalkeeper Robert Enke.

Germany have also not ruled out calling off a friendly international against Chile in Cologne on Saturday.

A German football federation DFB spokesman said a decision will be taken later on the remaining schedule for the team.

It was also unclear whether the first of the regular pre-match news conference scheduled for Wednesday would go ahead.

Coach Joachim Loew and team manager Oliver Bierhoff informed the squad Tuesday evening of Enke's death. The 32-year-old Hanover keeper was hit by a train at a railway crossing near his home on Tuesday evening.

Police said initial indications were that Enke had committed suicide.

"We are all shocked and lost for words," Bierhoff said.

The Germany squad is in Bonn preparing for friendly internationals against both Chile and Ivory Coast in Gelsenkirchen next Wednesday.

Enke had become Germany's number one goalkeeper after Jens Lehmann retired at the end of last year's Euro championships.

He was not with the current national squad after a bacterial infection had forced him to miss Germany's last four internationals.

He has only just returned to full fitness and played in Hanover's 2-2 draw against SV Hamburg at the weekend.

However Loew had indicated Enke would return next year, and the keeper was still seen as first choice for Germany's World Cup squad in South Africa next year. (dpa)
