St Etienne, who last season finished fifth in the French first division, but this season have slipped down into the relegation zone, rested several key players including Paul Machado.

Coach Alain Perrin explained before the game that the club's priority had to be the fight against relegation.

According to Berlin's Morgenpost Online, the players from Hertha Berlin and Borussia Dortmund were seen scratching at least one car and damaging the wing mirrors of five others.

Police confirmed "an incident" in the early hours of Wednesday morning in the district of Wilmersdorf.
