Tesla’s China-made EV wholesale shipments jump 128% in July 2023

Overall wholesale shipments of Tesla’s Made-in-China (MIC) electric cars, including local retail sales and exports to foreign markets, jumped more than 100 per cent to over 64,000 units in July 2023. As per stats shared by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), the overall wholesale shipments of Tesla MIC electric cars jumped 128 per cent year-over-year to settle at 64,285 units last month.

While the aforementioned rate of growth is really impressive, we shouldn’t ignore the fact that this growth is mainly due to the low base recorded in July 2022, when the EV giant could ship only 28,217 units. In other words, the growth isn’t due to a very high production rate at the automaker’s Shanghai gigafactory. In fact, last month was the slowest month in terms of MIC Tesla EV shipments thus far this year. In June this year, the company shipped 93,680 units.

Nonetheless, the result for the month under review can be considered as strong because it marked the strongest July ever. So far this year, the company’s average monthly sales volume is slightly more than 77,000 units. Besides all that, the American EV manufacturer slowed down a bit last month because of preparations for the upcoming refreshed all-electric Tesla Model 3 sedan, which has been codenamed as Highland. Another cause of the slowdown could be vacations for some of Shanghai gigafactory’s employees.

It is also worth noting here that CPCA reports only wholesale shipments of vehicle, not registrations or deliveries to customers. However, difference between wholesale shipments and deliveries to customers is often quite thin.

The initial CPCA stats doesn’t include retail sales and export figures or individual results for the two models: the Model 3 and Model Y. it doesn’t allow use to determine which of the two models is performing better in terms of sales. It may also be noted here that the first month of a quarter typically focused on export.

During the first seven months (January through July) of this year, wholesale vehicle shipments of the MIC Model 3 and Model Y jumped 68 per cent year-over-year to settle at 540,824 units.

The twelve-month rolling volume also increased significantly, reaching more than 928,000 units. the high annual volume also proved that the Tesla Giga Shanghai factory is the biggest EV manufacturing plant in the world, with a potential peak output expected to be above 1 million units per annum.
