Communists assure security to Tata''s small car plant at SingurSingur, Aug 6 : West Bengal''s Home Secretary Ashok Mohan Chakraborty has assured the management of TATA Motors that their small car plant in Singur will be provided with full security.

Speaking to the media after reviewing security at the controversial site, Chakraborty said: "The only reason to come here was to review the tensed situation here. We were told that there is a situation of civil war here. I would like to inform you that no abnormal situation is prevailing in Singur and work is progressing well," said Chakraborty.

12 pilgrims killed in road accident in West BengalKolkata, Aug 6: At least 12 pilgrims hailing from Jharkhand were killed and 13 injured when a truck hit a stranded bus on Durgapur Expressway at Chanditala in Hooghly District of West Bengal early this morning.

The victims were on their way to the Shiva temple at Tarakeswar in Hooghly District from Deoghar in Jharkhand.

They were standing near the stranded bus after it broke down near Kapapharia. The mishap occurred when the truck mowed them down and hit the bus.

Two suspected held for alleged links with Ahmedabad blasts

Siliguri (WB), Aug 1 : Two persons were arrested by Delhi Police team in Bhaktinagar area near here today in connection with the Ahmedabad blasts.

According to police officials, the duo, one of them a Bangladeshi and believed to be linked with a Gujarat blasts suspect, was arrested from Santipara under Bhoktinagar police station area in Jalpaiguri district.

Five crude bombs, one country-made fire-arm and some rounds of ammunition were also recovered from them.

The arrested were identified a Yessin Muhammad (25), a Bangladeshi national, and Muhammed Maniuddin (42).

Last night, police detained five people from the area but later three were released while the two were put under arrest.

Dalmiya Is Back As CAB Head

Jagmohan Dalmiya is elected head of the Cricket Association of Bengal. He Dalmiya Is Back As CAB Head defeated sitting president of CAB Prasun Mukherjee at the Eden Gardens. The result of voting is not officially declared but Dalmia is expected to gain 71 votes while Mukherjee got 47 votes. The election was started at 7 pm and total of 121 eligible units cast their vote.

Rare reptile found in Siliguri

Kurseong (West Bengal), July 30: After a gap of almost 150 years, a rare reptile commonly called 'Caecilian' has been found on the Makaibari Tea Estate near Kurseong.

Rajan Banerjee, the owner of the Makaibari Tea Estate said three to four more reptiles have been found ever since.

Delhi University experts are visiting the hills to conduct a thorough research on the rare reptile.

"This is endemic to this Sikkim-Darjeeling area and then since this animal is found in this locality. We can say that the ecosystem here is very much preserved for this animal," said Robin Siyush, the student from Delhi University.

Siliguri Tibetans protest Chinese repression in homeland

Siliguri, July 27 : Tibetans living in exile in Siliguri took out a rally to seek international attention on their freedom struggle.

Holding flags, around 500 Tibetans including school children took part in the protest rally.

As the Beijing Olympics approach, the Tibetans are trying to reinvigorate their freedom movement and protest against what they see as China''s illegal occupation of their homeland.
