Pakistan questions terror suspects, air forces on alert

Yousaf Raza GilaniIslamabad - Pakistan's prime minister Wednesday said the two top leaders of an Islamic militant group that India believes was behind the November 26 terrorist attacks in Mumbai were being questioned by police.

Yousaf Raza Gilani said Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi and Zarar Shah, were detained in a raid this week at the offices of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).

According to Indian officials, the lone surviving attacker in the Mumbai siege, which left 172 people dead and more than 300 injured, had identified LeT chief Lakhvi as the mastermind.

The alert has been sounded in view of intelligence reports of air strikes at Indian installations from across the border or an aerial attack by terrorists groups based in Pakistan.

However, the alert is still defensive in nature and intended to protect Indian targets.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Air Force (PAF) spokesman has said that Pakistan was ready to give a crushing reply to any aggression.

Pak NSA says Jamaat ud Dawa will be banned, if evidences against it is found

Islamabad, Dec. 10: Pakistan's National Security Advisor Mahmood Ali Durrani has said that if evidence is found against the Jamaat ud Dawa, the political wing of the Lashkar-e-Toiba, in connection with last month's terror attacks in Mumbai, then it would be banned.

He told Geo News that if any evidence is found against any organization during the investigations, then the same would also be banned.

Durrani''s statement came a day after Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Abdullah Hussain Haroon, echoed similar sentiments.

Talking to reporters at the UN headquarters in New York, Ambassador Haroon confirmed that India has approached to UN Security Council to get Jamaat-ud-Dawa banned.

Pak needs to change attitude on Lashkar activities, says Western diplomat

Islamabad, Dec. 10 : A Western diplomat has said "Pakistan needs to make a profound change in its attitude to Lashkar-e-Taiba, and that doesn't seem to have happened yet."

An important sign of whether Pakistan is serious about shutting down the Lashkar would be if the group were demobilized by the government, and its fighters given alternative employment, experts on jihadist groups have added.

According to the New York Times, questions have remained about how far Islamabad would go to rein in groups that have functioned as an alternate arm of Pakistan's military and intelligence services for two decades.

Pakistan FlagIslamabad - Pakistan's defence minister confirmed Tuesday that the alleged planner of the November 26 Mumbai terrorist attacks, Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, and chief of a militant outfit Jaish-e-Mohammad, Maulana Masood Azhar, have been arrested.

"Lakhvi was picked up yesterday. Azhar has also been picked up," Chaudhry Mukhar Ahmed said told CNN-IBN in a telephone interview. According to Indian officials, Ajmal Amir Kasav, the lone surviving Mumbai attacker, told investigators that Lakhwi was the alleged mastermind of the siege.
