Nadal to again be World No.1

rafael-nadalBeijing, Oct 5 : Rafael Nadal of Spain was guaranteed of returning to the World No. 1 spot for the first time since July 2011 after his opponent Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic retired from their semifinal clash at the China Open here Saturday.

Current No. 1 Novak Djokovic of Serbia will take on Frenchman Richard Gasquet in the other semifinal and no matter the result of the match, he will lose the top spot to Nadal.

Nadal had two breaks while Berdych had one in the first six games and the Czech seemed to twist his back hitting the ball while trailing at 2-4. And after five minutes' medical time, the Czech opted to quit.

Chinese tycoon to rebuild London's Crystal Palace

Crystal-Palace-RebuildBeijing, Oct 4 : China's real estate group Zhongrong has unveiled plans to rebuild London's famous Crystal Palace Park that was damaged by a fire in 1936, a media report said Friday.

The group announced that it would build a replica of the Crystal Palace, famous for housing the Great Exhibition of 1851, reported the China Daily.

According to the report, the 500-million-pound project would replicate the 900,000 square feet glass halls of the palace and also the 180-acre Crystal Palace Park.

Djokovic eases into China Open second round

Novak-DjokovicBeijing, Oct 1 : World No. 1 Novak Djokovic moved into the China Open second round Tuesday with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic.

Defending champion Djokovic was never troubled by World No. 46 Rosol, who just won 11 points in the one-sided first set.

"I needed to be very fresh from the start and try to bring that intensity, positive intensity to the court, and that's what happened," Djokovic was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

"I didn't want to underestimate my opponent, knowing that he had a few big wins in his career and he has a big serve."

China manufacturing growth hits 17-month high in September

China-manufacturingBeijing, Oct 1 : China's manufacturing activities achieved a 17-month record high in September, an official survey showed, indicating a stable economic rebound.

China's Purchasing Managers' Index for the manufacturing sector rose to 51.1 percent in September from 51 percent in August, Xinhua reported Tuesday citing the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing.

A reading below 50 indicates contraction while anything above signals expansion.

BMW-Brilliance Automotive Ltd., a joint venture between Brilliance China Automotive and German luxury carmaker BMW, is to recall 75,832 BMW 5 series cars due to problematic socket adapters in their tail lights, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said in a statement.

According to a statement issued by China's State Internet Information Office (SIIO) Monday, some mobile news apps provide news services without qualifications prescribed by internet regulators and even publish false information, reported Xinhua.

Williams, Li into second round at China Open

"China welcomes the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) decision and the United Nations Security Council's resolution on Syrian chemical weapons," Xinhua quoted foreign ministry spokesman Qin Gang as saying.

Qin's comments came after the UN Security Council voted unanimously Friday to adopt a resolution aimed at ridding war-torn Syria of chemical weapons.

Chinese space station to be open to foreigners

"The space station will offer astronauts from around the world opportunities for research and experimentation," Zhou Jianping, designer-in-chief of China's manned space programme, told Xinhua on the sidelines of an international symposium in Beijing.

China's space station is expected to be completed around 2020.

More than half of the world's richest self-made female entrepreneurs are from China, the China Daily reported citing Hurun China's Women Rich List 2013.

Around 25 percent of the women are from the realty development sector, while 18 percent are from the finance and investment sector, the report said.

Pharmaceutical and manufacturing sectors represented nine percent each.

Eleven women debuted on the list in 2013, according to the China Daily report.

Housing prices continue to rise in China

Housing prices continue to rise in ChinaAccording to the latest official data released, the housing prices in Chinese cities continued to rise during the month of August.

The data showed that out of the 70 major Chinese cities, 66 cities recorded a rise in prices of new as well as existing houses on the monthly basis. The figure of 66 is higher than 62 cities recorded in July, according to the data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) that was released on Wednesday. The report also showed that 58 cities reported month-on-month price increases in existing and second-hand homes in August compared to 57 in July.

China to raise retail fuel prices

China to raise retail fuel pricesBeijing, Sep 14 - China's gasoline and diesel retail prices will be raised Saturday, the country's top economic planner said.

The benchmark retail prices of gasoline and diesel will rise by 0.07 yuan (1.1 cent) per litre, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) said Friday in a statement on its website, reports Xinhua.

The new price represents an increase of 90 yuan and 85 yuan per tonne for gasoline and diesel prices, respectively, said the NDRC.

This is the third time the prices have been hiked in two months.

China's plan to cut air pollution

Air-PollutionBeijing, Sep 12 : China aims to cut down its coal consumption to under 65 percent of its overall primary energy use by 2017 in a government action plan to cut down on air pollution.

Several initiatives have been envisaged in the action plan, unveiled Thursday, as part of the country's efforts to readjust its energy structure and increase clean energy supply, Xinhua reported citing the central government's website.

New projects in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and both the Yangtze Delta and the Pearl River Delta regions will be banned from setting up their own coal-fired power plants.

Syrian opposition delegation begins China visit

Hong-LeiBeijing, Sep 10 : A six-member delegation of the opposition Syrian National Dialogue Forum has started its visit to China at the invitation of the Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs, foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei confirmed Tuesday.

During their stay, senior officials of the Chinese foreign ministry will meet and exchange views with them, Xinhua quoted Hong as saying at a daily news briefing.

"China has been engaged in mediation efforts with all parties involved in the Syrian issue in an active and balanced way, making unremitting endeavours to push for a political solution," Hong said.

World's highest airport to open Sep 16

Daocheng-Yading-AirportBeijing, Sep 10 : The world's highest civilian airport, Daocheng Yading Airport in China situated at a height of 4,411 metres above sea level, is expected to start operating from Sep 16, the country's tourism authorities announced Tuesday.

Located in southwest China's Sichuan province, the airport will cut travel time between Dacheng county and the provincial capital of Chengdu from two days by bus to 65 minutes by plane, Xinhua reported.

Li Na to play Djokovic in battle of sexes

Li-NaBeijing, Sep 6 : China's top women tennis player Li Na will play world No. 1 men's singles player Novak Djokovic of Serbia in a battle of sexes here Sep 27.

It will be a charity match and its income will go to a tennis development fund in China, the organisers said Friday, reports Xinhua.

Both Li Na and Djokovic are competing at the US Open. Li Na faces world No. 1 Serena Williams in the semifinals and Djorkovic meets Stanislas Wawrinka from Switzerland at the same stage. (IANS)
