Indian Navy to commission two warships today

Chennai, Feb 16: The Indian Navy will commission two warships, INS Carnicobar and INS Chetlat here today.

These would be the first two in a series of ten water jet fast attack ships being built at Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers, Kolkata. Tamil Nadu Governor Surjit Singh Barnala will commission the ships at Chennai.

They will also be the first ever water jet propelled ships of the Indian Navy.

These fast attack crafts are named after pristine islands located in the Andaman and Nicobar and Lakshadweep respectively and will be based at Chennai thereby strengthening coastal security of the region.

Lawyers in Chennai take to the streets over Lankan conflict

The lawyers started their protest from the Chennai High Court and went towards the regional military office in the city to stage a demonstration.

Chennai Advocate Association President Kanakaraj said that they wanted the Central Government to intervene to stop the war in Sri Lanka and said, "We will continue our protest for our Tamil brothers in Sri Lanka.

A help line for homosexuals launched in ChennaiChennai, Feb. 8 : Volunteers and associates of a non-government organization here have launched a help line for homosexuals to provide professional and emotional counselling.

The Chennai-based Indian Community Welfare Organisation (ICWO) launched the help line on Saturday.

The ICWO works for the transgenders, eunuchs, homosexuals and the marginalized sections of the society.

According to A J Hariharan, ICWO's founder Secretary, the help line will address issues confronting homosexuals.
