Talks with Palestinian groups continue in Cairo

Cairo  - Egyptian Intelligence Chief Omar Soleiman will meet in Cairo with a delegation from the Palestine Democratic Union on Wednesday to discuss ways to end the inter-Palestinian conflict.

This meeting comes almost two weeks after Egypt's first bilateral meeting with a delegation of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad group.

"Our party values the role Egypt plays to end the state of division that took place after the Islamic movement Hamas took over the Gaza Strip," Saleh Raafat, Secretary General of the Palestine Democratic Union, told the official MENA news agency on Tuesday after he arrived in Cairo.

Syria urges Arab ministers to discuss US sanctions

Cairo  - Foreign ministers of the Arab League gathered in Cairo on Monday for talks expected to centre on the Palestinian situation and the crisis in Darfur.

Chaired by Saudi Arabia Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal, the session was due to begin in the evening.

Among those participating are Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Arab League Chief Amr Mussa.

The ministers also planned to discuss a unified Arab position to free the region from nuclear weapons.

According to diplomatic sources, Syria wants the ministers to take up the issue of US sanctions preventing Syria and Sudan buying or renting commercial planes.

Egypt investigating reports about hijacked ship off Somalia Cairo  - The Egyptian Foreign Ministry is investigating reports that pirates hijacked an Egyptian ship off the coast of Somalia, an official said on Thursday.

"I called the Egyptian ambassador to Kenya, Saher Hamza, so that he would follow the reports and" learn more details, said Ahmed Rezq, the ministry official in charge of consular affairs and expatriates.

Rezq said Hamza told him the vessel was seized in the Eyl area of the semi-autonomous northern region of Puntland.
