Cairo- Thirteen prison guards were injured when gunmen disguised as visitors opened fire on them at Assiut in Upper Egypt, security sources said.

The sources told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa the gunmen were apparently trying to free a group of inmates from the prison.

Firing was still going on mid-afternoon, the sources said without giving further details. (dpa)
