Karzai blames Britain for Taliban resurgence

Kabul, Sept. 8 : For Hamid Karzai, it’s battle for survivalAfghanistan President Hamid Karzai has blamed Britain for the resurgence of the Taliban and its growing activity in large tracts of his country.

Interacting with a group of Afghan MPs, Karzai said that he and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown had a row over warlords and drugs barons.

According to The Times, Karzai claims Brown threatened to withdraw British troops from southern Helmand province, if Karzai took the step of reappointing two provincial governors sacked for alleged dealings in the heroin trade.

Karzai to attend Zardari’s oath-taking ceremony

Islamabad, Sep 8: Karzai to attend Zardari’s oath-taking ceremonyAfghanistan President Hamid Karzai will attend the oath-taking ceremony of Pakistan’s president-elect Asif Ali Zardari on Tuesday.

“The Pakistani president invited him to take part in the oath-taking ceremony to be held in Islamabad soon”, and Karzai has accepted the invitation, Dawn reported.

According to a statement issued by Karzai’s office, the Afghan President telephoned Zardari to congratulate him on winning the September 6 presidential election.

New Pakistani president invites Afghan counterpart to Islamabad Kabul  - Pakistan's president-elect Asif Ali Zardari has invited his Afghan counterpart to attend his oath-taking ceremony next week, the Afghan government said Sunday.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai called Zardari to congratulate him on his victory in the presidential poll Saturday, Karzai's office said in a statement.

"The Pakistani president invited him (Karzai) to take part in the oath-taking ceremony to be held in Islamabad soon," the statement said, adding that Karzai accepted the invitation.

Karzai condemns killing of 76 Afghan civilians in US airstrike

Afghan President Hamid KarzaiKabul - Afghan President Hamid Karzai Saturday condemned the killing of 76 civilians, mostly children, by a US airstrike in western Afghanistan, and vowed his government would take necessary measures to curtail such deaths in the future.

The US military acknowledged in a statement that it was aware of the government's allegations of civilian deaths in the operation against Taliban fighters Friday in the district Shindand of western Herat province.

"All allegations of civilian casualties are taken very seriously," the statement said. "An investigation has been directed."

New Delhi, Aug 4 : Karzai to discuss terrorism, development with Manmohan SinghAfghan President Hamid Karzai will meet Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh here today and will hold talks on bilateral, regional and international issues of mutual concern to both countries.

Cooperation between both countries and security related issues are expected to dominate the talks.
