Court to pronounce sentence in 1998 Coimbatore blasts case

Coimbatore, Sept. 28 : The Special Sessions Court will begin delivering the sentences in the 1998 Coimbatore serial bomb blasts case from today.

Of the 166 accused, the court had convicted 158 on various charges, including the founder of the Al-Umma, Syed Ahmed Basha and its General Secretary, Mohammed Ansari. Of this, the court had found 70 of the accused guilty on various grounds, including conspiracy.

The court had acquitted Abdul Nasser Madani, the leader of the Kerala-based People's Democratic Party. The court had also given bail to seven others.

NASA study indicates presence of oxygen on Earth 2.5 bln years ago

Washington, Sept 28 : A new NASA funded research has pushed back the timeline for presence of oxygen in the Earth’s atmosphere by 50-100 million years before the Great Oxidation Event.

The event happened between 2.3 and 2.4 billion years ago, when many scientists think atmospheric oxygen increased significantly from the existing very low levels.

As part of their study, the scientists analysed a kilometre-long drill core from Western Australia, representing the time just before the major rise of atmospheric oxygen.

Paswan to release National Policy on Petrochemicals today

New Delhi, Sept. 28 : Minister of Fertilizers and Chemicals and Steel Ram Vilas Paswan will release the National Policy on Petrochemicals here today.
The policy is aimed at promoting investment in upstream in downstream industries, increase production and consumption, create infrastructure and promote research and development of plastic and synthetic fibres.

Sensex Makes A Strong Ending, NSE Nifty Hits 5K

The markets closed strong on Thursday with the benchmark index soaring 1.3% to close the day at 17,150 levels. In the intraday dealings, the 30-share index performed in a range of 17,018-17,188 levels.

Nifty hit a record high of 5,016 levels. The 50-share index ended the perky day at 5,000 after gaining 1.2 per cent. NSE Nifty took 205 trading sessions to made last 1,000 points.

During the flight from 4,000 to 5,000 levels, Foreign Institutional Investors pumped in $10.75 billion whereas Mutual Funds inducted $1.26 billion.
