China says West should continue its 'key role' on climate change

Washington, Sept.22 : China has said that developed countries should continue to take the lead in reducing emissions in the post Kyoto Protocol period.

China's newly appointed special representative for climate change, Yui Qingtai, has said that the current international mechanism for tackling global warming after 2012 should define the obligations of developed countries.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the UN-sponsored Kyoto Protocol, which expires in 2012, are key guiding instruments for addressing global warming.

Meteor crash in Peru causes mysterious illness

Washington, Sept.22 : A mysterious illness has hit a number of residents living near the Lake Titicara in Peru following the crashing of a rare kind of meteorite.

Peruvian researchers have confirmed the origins of the object after studying samples of it at a laboratory in Lima.

Residents, according to the National Geographic, have complained of headaches and nausea, spurring speculation that the explosion was a subterranean geyser eruption or a release of noxious gas from decayed matter underground.

Rapeseed biofuel ‘produces more greenhouse gas than oil or petrol’

Washington, Sept.22 : A renewable energy source designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is contributing more to global warming than fossil fuels, a study has suggested.

BJP demands unqualified apology from Centre over Ram Setu issue

Bhopal, Sept 22 : Blaming the UPA Government of completely bungling in handling the Ram Setu issue, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday demanded an “unqualified apology” from the Centre, and said the ruling coalition should recognising Ram as a “great national hero.”

In its resolution on the Ram Setu issue, adopted at its ongoing national executive meet here, the BJP also called for preservation of the bridge as a National Heritage, saying that during the debate on this issue in Rajya Sabha, important party leaders had demanded this.

Australia could drop Queen as head of state, says opposition leader

London, Sept.22 : The Queen could be dropped as Australia’s head of state within three years under plans drawn up by the man tipped to be the country’s next prime minister.

Labour Party leader Kevin Rudd is surging ahead in the polls and is expected to deliver a humiliating defeat to the government of Prime Minister John Howard at an election due within weeks.

A staunch republican, Rudd wants Australia to cut its constitutional ties with Britain, replacing the Queen with an elected president, reports The Telegraph.

Less complex synthetic heparin created

Washington, Sept 22 : Researchers have patented a synthetic version of the drug heparin, called Recomparin, that is less complex chemically and easier to produce than previous forms.

Heparin has loads of advantages such as it helps in preventing clots from forming and restricting the flow of blood during and after procedures such as kidney dialysis, heart-bypass surgery, stent implantation and knee and hip replacement. The annual worldwide sales of the drug are estimated at 3 billion dollars.
