One In 10 Pregnant Women Admits To Drinking in US: CDC

A latest report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says more than one in 10 pregnant women in the United States admits that they had alcohol. One in 33 admitted to at least one episode of binge-drinking, shows report.

Dr. Maura Quinlan, an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, said in a statement that data revealed in the report is very discouraging; it is higher than what has been thought.

The study's lead author, Cheryl Tan, an epidemiologist in the CDC's National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities, said alcohol consumption during pregnancy increases the risk of miscarriage, premature delivery and stillbirth.

Study Reveals Reason behind Babies’ Smile

Well, as you know there is always a give-and-take process, a study on why babies smile concludes that they expect something in return of their smiles from their respective parents.

In order to known the reason behind why babies smile, researchers at the University of California, San Diego, designed a robot that had the ability to act like a baby. The robot observed 13 pairs of babies younger than four months of age and their mothers out of which 11 smiled on purpose.

The child robot that was designed to observe the infants and their behavior was the part of the new study. The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that the interaction of the child robot was done with the UC San Diego students.

Humpback whale seen near Astoria Bridge

On Friday, a humpback whale was seen breaching close to the Washington side of the Astoria bridge. According to Mammal Institute, at least four humpback whales were spotted in the Columbia River at the border line between Oregon and Washington.

According to biologist Deborah Jacques, until now, humpbacks have never been spotted inland along the Columbia River. As per experts, shortage of food in natural habitat of the whales could be a reason.

It was thought that gravitational waves emerging from black hole mergers would be detected in a search of the cosmos. But even after 11 years of search, no such detection has been made. Over 1,000 Seabirds killed to protect Endangered Salmon

An effort to protect endangered salmon is resulting into culling of thousands of seabirds on an Oregon island. Since May this year, the United States government has killed over a thousand seabirds on the island just to protect the fish. Many environmentalists said that the mass killing of seabirds, a plan of US government, should be stopped.

A report released on Friday by US officials said the country's government has killed more than 1,200 cormorant birds, and over 5,000 nests have been destroyed completely. The culling will continue in October until the seabirds leave the place due to upcoming winter season, according to the officials.
