New research papers reveal Pluto as more interesting than previously thought

Before New Horizons spacecraft’s close flyby of the dwarf planet Pluto, who had imagined that the Kuiper belt object will be one of the most interesting places in the solar system? On Thursday, New Horizons team published a set of five papers whose findings are based on data and images beamed back by the spacecraft. The new details have revealed a lot of information about what makes Pluto and its moons complex space objects. The papers have been published by journal Science.

Healthy Heart May Help Check Decline of Brain Functions in Growing Age

A new research published in Journal of the American Heart Association has found that a healthy heart may at times work wonders to check the decline of brain function, a condition generally associated with advancing age.

Conducted by researchers from the University of Miami and Columbia University, the study analyzed seven factors, including tobacco avoidance, ideal levels of weight, physical activity, healthy diet, blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose, all of which together comprise the American Heart Association’s "Life's Simple Seven®" and are used to define cardiovascular health.

Refugees more vulnerable to experience psychotic disorders than natives and other migrants

The trauma of running away from persecution, war and natural disasters can leave permanent scars on an individual. A latest study has highlighted the extent of the effect such life experiences can have on refugees.

As per a study of 1.3 million people in Sweden, refugees are highly vulnerable to suffering psychotic disorders, like schizophrenia, as compared to the native residents and other migrants.

Published on Tuesday in the journal BMJ, the research said that refugees have three times more chances of experiencing schizophrenia and other psychoses than native-born Swedes.

It has also been found that refugees are also two-thirds as likely of contracting such disorders in comparison to people who have come from the same areas but due to other reasons, like economic factors.

Report: Allen County ranks 39th among Indiana’s 92 counties in health outcomes

In 2016’s Robert Wood Johnson Health Rankings Report, Allen County has gone further back within the pack of Indiana counties. The county has below the state average of primary care doctors and lower uninsured people as compared to past years, even then, it has ranked 39th among 92 counties of Indiana in health outcomes.

The ranking was based on premature deaths and quality-of-life measures. In the state, the county has ranked as the 44th healthiest.

Allen County has reached nine spots below last year’s health outcomes rank of 30 to the neighborhood where it’s been hanging for many years. In 2014, the county ranked 37th, 40th in 2013 and 35th in 2012 and 2011, which was the survey’s first year.

Study finds high risk of alcohol dependence among medical students

A new study has concluded that medical students have more chances of indulging into alcohol abuse, mainly due to, excessive work burden, burnout and debt issues. The study team has found connection between higher alcohol dependence and burnout among medical students.

In a news release, study senior author Dr. Liselotte Dyrbye, an internist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., said, “Our findings clearly show there is reason for concern. We recommend institutions pursue a multifaceted solution to address related issues with burnout, the cost of medical education and alcohol abuse”.
