Lufthansa wants BMI majority stakeFrankfurt  - German airline Lufthansa AG said Friday it had decided to take out a majority stake in British carrier BMI.

Lufthansa finance director Stephan Gemkow told reporters that the carrier was "determined" to exercise its options to acquire the majority stake in the British airline, which operates between Europe and the US.

Lufthansa currently holds 30 per cent minus one share of BMI and has the possibility of acquiring the 50 per cent plus one share stake held by BMI chief Michael Bishop.

The German airline's move followed the release of its quarterly results which showed the group chalking up a solid rise in operating profits during the first three months of the year to 188 million euros (295 million dollars). The compared with 36 million euros in the same period last year. (dpa)
