The role of technology in supporting the counter terrorism and internal security efforts was highlighted today by the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh.
According to a commission statement, “The European Commission on Thursday pledged an additional 40.5 million euros (US $58.7 million) to the Burmese people inside the country and along its borders.”
As per the statement, nearly 22 million euros will go to the people affected by the Cyclone Nargis in the Irrawaddy delta and about 18.5 million euros will go to help the highly vulnerable people in the remote regions along the Sino-Burmese border and in the Burmese refugee camps on the Thailand-Burma border, via the operational partners such as nongovernmental organizations, UN agencies and the Red Cross.
The cyclone which hit on 2-3 May, took the lives of more than 14,000 people and many were missing following the cyclone.

On Friday, Rupee fell by 31 paise against the dollar to close at 47.26/27 in the midst of cuts in interest rates as inflation has declined to a nine-month low.
The trade, which was fairly active, showed that the domestic currency started at 47.20/22 a dollar and later fluctuated between 47.36 and 46.86 on alternate bouts of dollar buying and selling during the day. Yesterday the rupee had closed at 46.95/96 a dollar.
A $40 million profit is to be achieved by India’s space programme as the European space consortium Arianespace, would launch the W2M satellite, built by ISRO for a foreign customer.
By developing the W2M for the satellite operator Eutelsat, under the ISRO-EADS Astrium alliance, the Bangalore- headquartered space agency is all set to make its presence felt in the satellite-manufacturing market.
