Greener neighbourhoods may help cut childhood obesity

Childhood ObesityWashington, Oct 29: Kids living in “greener” neighbourhoods are less likely to gain weight compared to those in areas with less green space, according to a new study.

The study involved more than 3800 children, predominantly African-American and poor aged 3-16.

Studying the children for over a two-year period, the researchers observed that higher greenness was significantly associated with lower body mass index (BMI) in kids.

Thais put their faith in judiciary, poll finds

Bangkok - The vast majority of Thai people believe the judicial system is the best means to solve the country's political impasse that has pitted anti-government against pro-government forces for months, an opinion poll revealed Wednesday.

Of 4,988 people surveyed by leading pollster Assumption Business Administration College (ABAC Poll), 92.4 per cent said judicial procedures provided the best solution to Thailand's political woes.

According to ABAC, 80.5 per cent of the respondents also said they wanted all parties to follow last week's Supreme Court ruling that sentenced former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra in absentia to two years in jail.

Philippine troops foil bomb attack on bus terminal

PhilippinesManila - Philippine troops recovered three homemade bombs planted in a bus terminal in the southern Philippines, an army spokesman said Wednesday.

The improvised explosive devices were found Tuesday in Kabacan town in North Cotabato province, 960 kilometres south of Manila, according to Lieutenant Colonel Romeo Brawner.

Brawner said the bombs were made from 81-millimetre and 60-millimetre mortars that were attached to electric blasting caps with mechanical timers.

Drew Barrymore makes her directorial debut with hugs and kisses

Drew BarrymoreWashington, October 28: Drew Barrymore has managed to get the best out of the cast of her directorial debut by flooding them with hugs and kisses.

The actress, who is directing the forthcoming comedy ‘Whip It!’, had made her cast felt at home.

"(She) is the biggest hippie I''ve ever met. I got more hugs and kisses with her than I get from my family,” Contactmusic quoted and rapper-turned-actress Eve as saying.

"Even though we were bruised and bashed around, Drew was there to hug us and give us love,” she added.

Suicide bombers target UN, Ethiopian embassy in Somalia

Mogadishu - Five suicide bomb attacks, including one on an Ethiopian embassy and one on a UN compound, rocked Somalia Wednesday, witnesses said.

Witness Farhaan Omaye told Deutsche Presse Agentur dpa that three near-simultaneous bombs went off in in Hargeysa, in the breakaway northern state of Somaliland.

The Ethiopian embassy and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) compound were targeted, as was Somaliland's presidential palace.

Two other bombs exploded in the semi-autonomous state of Puntland at the offices of the Puntland Intelligence Service in the port town of Bosasso, witness Mohamed Ali told dpa.

There was no immediate information on casualties.
