Delphi Corp. to set up Rs 250 cr plant near Chennai

A leading mobile electronics, transportation components, and systems technology manufacturer, Delphi Corp, has announced the setting up of its Rs 250 crore electronics manufacturing facility in Oragadam, about 40 km from Chennai.

Jeffrey J Owens, President, Electronics & Safety, Asia Pacfic, said that the new facility, will be an assembling facility and it will be converted to manufacturing in the years to come. The electronics manufacturing facility would cater to the requirements of vehicle manufacturers already operating in India.

Owens added: “In the Asia-Pacific region, India is the country with great promising growth opportunities. Increasing income levels and availability of capital and expanded new vehicle offerings have been driving the growth. Besides, India is becoming a hub for development and manufacturing of small cars.”

Specifically speaking, in the first phase, the plant will initially produce immobilizers, body computers, instrument cluster, and driver information systems, followed by safety and entertainment products.

The announced manufacturing facility would be Delphi’s fifth manufacturing in the country - with two in Delhi region, and one each in Uttar Pradesh and Bangalore. The company will now have all the five portfolios manufactured in India including power train, thermal, steering, wiring harness and electronics.

President and managing director, Delphi India, Ashok B Ramaswamy, said that the Chennai plant extends the electronics and safety manufacturing footprint to India and increases the Delphi local product portfolio to meet the market needs.
