ICICI Bank Share Price Target at Rs 1,750: Motilal Oswal Issues Bullish Outlook for Private Sector Lender

Motilal Oswal has reiterated its BUY call on ICICI Bank with a target price of Rs 1,750, about 25% above the current market price of Rs 1,397 after a stellar second quarter. Standalone profit rose 20% from a year earlier to Rs 14,840 crore, in line with estimates. Loans grew 30% and deposits 27%, helped by a large mobilisation of foreign-currency FCNR(B) deposits. Net interest margin slipped 18 basis points to 4.18%, but management expects it to recover from the fourth quarter. Gross bad loans fell to 1.2%. The brokerage raised its fiscal 2028 earnings estimate by 3% and kept the stock as its top sector pick.

ICICI Bank: Motilal Oswal keeps its top banking pick as loans race 30% ahead

A borrowed-dollar deposit drive dents margins for two quarters, yet profit, asset quality and the franchise's sheer momentum leave the brokerage seeing a 25% upside to Rs 1,750.

The stock trades at 2.2x FY27E and 1.9x FY28E adjusted book, and at 13.6x FY28E earnings. Motilal Oswal now pencils in FY28 return on assets of 2.4% and return on equity of 17.6%, figures the brokerage says sit "beyond aspiration for most peers" at ICICI Bank's scale.

How the quarter reconciled with the estimate

Standalone profit after tax of Rs 14,840 crore landed almost exactly where Motilal Oswal expected, up 20.1% year on year. Consolidated profit climbed 22.3% to Rs 16,330 crore. Beneath that match, a miss on other income was offset by a large saving on provisions.

Add: net interest income ahead of estimate (+1%) +Rs 190 crore
Less: other income short of estimate (−10%) −Rs 900 crore

Less: higher tax −Rs 80 crore
Reported standalone PAT Rs 14,840 crore

Net interest income grew 17.7% to Rs 25,340 crore. Other income of Rs 8,050 crore disappointed partly because of a treasury loss of Rs 230 crore, against a gain of Rs 150 crore in the June quarter, even as core fees rose 20.1% on one-off FCNR(B) processing fees. Operating expenses rose 8.5% to Rs 12,810 crore, lifting the cost-to-income ratio to 38.4%, while core operating profit advanced 21.8% to Rs 20,810 crore.

Loans reached Rs 18.32 lakh crore, up 12.3% in a single quarter, while deposits rose to Rs 20.50 lakh crore. Domestic advances grew a more measured 22.8%. Within retail, mortgages grew 15.3% and personal loans 16.6%, but credit-card balances shrank 9.7% and gold loans slowed as the bank aligned processes with new RBI rules.

The dollar deposits reshaped the loan mix. The international share jumped from 3.1% to 7.8% of loans in one quarter, while the retail share fell from 56.2% to 51.6%. The CASA ratio dropped to 36.1% from 39.5% as term deposits swelled.

The FCNR(B) drive, and why margins took the hit

ICICI Bank mobilised about Rs 1.60 lakh crore (converted at about Rs 89 to the dollar) of FCNR(B) deposits. The bank itemised how two parts were funded:

~Rs 89,000 crore
~Rs 32,000 cr
~Rs 39,000 cr
Backed by the bank's own loans
Backed by partner-bank financing
Balance not itemised (TopNews arithmetic)

The bank raised bonds to fund the leverage it extended against these deposits. That cost pushed up expenses but was largely offset by the processing fees. Net interest margin fell 18 basis points to 4.18%, or 10 basis points excluding a tax-refund interest benefit in the previous quarter. Management laid out a clear path:

Quarter Margin direction What drives it
Q2FY27 ▼ 4.18% reported FCNR(B) mobilisation and a sharp rise in term deposits
Q3FY27 ▼ Further moderation Full impact of FCNR(B), partly offset by the rate hike
Q4FY27 onward ▲ Recovery begins Motilal Oswal models 4.4% for FY27 and 4.5% for FY28

Gross NPA ratio, circle diameter proportional to the ratio

Fresh slippages fell 4% year on year and 13% sequentially to Rs 4,830 crore. Net NPA eased to 0.30%, the provision coverage ratio edged up to 75.5%, and the contingency buffer held at Rs 13,100 crore, about 0.7% of loans. The bank also carries additional standard-asset provisions of Rs 1,283 crore. Management guided normalised credit cost of up to 50 basis points, after a chunky corporate recovery and higher general provisions largely cancelled out this quarter.

The earnings runway

Motilal Oswal lifted its FY28 profit estimate by 3% on stronger interest income, trimming other income by 3.5% for both years. It expects earnings per share to compound at about 21% over two years.

What could spoil the thesis

Watch list

A deeper margin dip. If FCNR(B) costs bite harder in the December quarter, or the fourth-quarter recovery slips, earnings estimates would face pressure.

Thinner low-cost funding. The CASA ratio has slid more than 3 percentage points in a quarter as institutional savings balances moderate.

Credit cost normalising. This quarter's low provisions benefited from a large recovery; guidance of up to 50 basis points implies a higher run-rate ahead.

Patchy unsecured retail. Credit cards and gold loans are still recalibrating.

Editor's note

Motilal Oswal's report does not print a formal risk list, so the watch list above is drawn from the brokerage's and management's own commentary.

The report's Exhibit 3 title says fee income grew 21.8% and core operating profit 20.1%, while its text and quarterly table show the reverse: fees up 20.1% and core operating profit up 21.8%. This article follows the text and table.

The first page describes CASA deposits as up 10.7% year on year; management's commentary and the table show that is the growth in average CASA, while period-end CASA rose 12.4%.

The report labels ICICI Lombard's 3% premium growth as "2QFY26"; given the context, it most likely refers to Q2FY27.
