About 39 percent of all servers are virtualized, study
According to a new virtualisation study, about 39 percent of servers in business organizations are not physical.
The ‘V-Index’ study analyzed large businesses in the UK, US, France and Germany and found that reliance on virtualized servers is growing. Vanson Bourne surveyed 544 businesses, under the study commissioned by virtualisation management firm Veeam.
The study found that a large organizations runs on average 470 virtual machines and 113 hosts. It was also noted that an over whelming majority of businesses use virtualization for atleast some tasks. However, about four in ten businesses see reliability concerns as a barrier to further virtualization.
VMware was found to be the market leader used by 84 percent of firms. About sixty percent used also use Microsoft Hyper-V, fifty-five percent use Citrix Xen and 12 percent use others. Several business enterprises are found to be using servers from more than one provider.
Veeam is planning to conduct the research on a quarterly basis and build the V-Index site into a community site allowing businesses to share their experience with virtualisation.
“While the results show that virtualisation has become a standard technology in most enterprises, it is clear that there is still room for increased penetration,” said Ratmir Timashev, chief executive at Veeam.
