200 Hospitalized After Chlorine Gas Leak In Jamshedpur; No Casualties

Around 150 to 200 people, on Tuesday, were taken to hospital after Chlorine leak at Jamshedpur plant leaves 200 illinhaling chlorine gas leaked from a water filter plant in Jamshedpur.

Till late on Tuesday night there was no death. While 50 were admitted to Tata Motors Hospital to provide medical aid, over 150 were discharged after treatment.

Jamshedpur MP Suman Mahato said, “We don’t expect casualty though the leak has been serious. I met several people in the hospital who are not being able to breathe or see properly. One of them is in a pretty bad shape but hopefully there will be no casualty.”

The police said that the residents of the Jamshedpur township, run by Tata Motors, complained that the gas leakage started around 10 in the morning and slowly spread all through out the area.

Ganesh Kumar, a senior government official speaking in Jamshedpur, one of the main towns in Jharkhand state, stated, “Some of them fell to the ground from dizziness, but there is no need to panic as we have alerted doctors and nurses to tackle the situation.”

Now the situation was under control, the company said.

A Tata Motors spokesman said, “There was a leak in the chlorine filtration facility of the water supply system. The leak has been successfully plugged.”

But functionaries stated that they were probing the plant for stopping such disruptions in future and evacuating people.

In one of India's worst industrial disasters in 1984, a toxic gas leak at a pesticide plant in the central city of Bhopal killed nearly 15,000 people and affected half a million.
