Taiwan sees first superbug case
A 56-year old man, who was operated for a kidney transplant in China, has been detected as the first Taiwanese man carrying superbug NDM-1. He is suspected to have contracted the bug during kidney transplant, Deputy Chief of Centers for Disease Control (CDC) under the Taiwanese Department of Health Lin Ding said in a press conference recently.
Commander of the contagious disease prevention and treatment network in Taipei area Chang Shan-Chwen was also present during the joint press conference.
As per Lin, the old man was operated in Jiangxi Province in southeastern China in October last year and after he returned to China he got admitted in the hospital for lower abdominal pain. Later during an MRI, it was discovered that there was a deposition of fluids in his abdominal cavity. Tests on those fluids later found out that the man was carrying the NDM-1 superbug.
As per last report, though the patient is now free from the superbug and in good health, he has been kept under treatment and observation. The Taiwanese officials have already reported about the incident to the World Health organisation.
