Chennai, Mar 22 : Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Tamil Nadu unit president L. Ganesan on Sunday said that his party would declare the `Ramasetu' a heritage monument, if his party voted to power at the Centre in the general elections.

"BJP will declare the `Ramasetu' a heritage monument, if the party voted to power at the Centre in the general elections," Ganesan said in a statement.

Tiruchirapalli, Mar 21 : Security at Tiruchirapalli airport was tightened on Saturday after a message was received at Kolkata airport threatening bombs explosions at airports in Southern India.

A city police team was deployed along with the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) within the airport complex.

A Bomb Disposal and Detection Squad was also called in to conduct checks.

Krishnakari (Tamil Nadu), Mar 21 : Rural women in Tamil Nadu are independently participating in the business of making chapattis under the guidance of self-help groups.

The Tamil Nadu Government and the Central Government have implemented the Mahalir Sangam in partnership with a non-government organization with the objective of improving the socio-economic condition of women and ensuring their empowerment.

A group of 20 women are working under the self-help group Shivaskathi Mahalir Sangam.

Chennai, Mar 19 : The Madras High Court on Thursday awarded a life sentence to P. Rajagopal, the founder of the Saravana Bhavan hotel chain.

Rajagopal, 59, was found guilty for murdering one of his employees, Prince Shantakumar, in 2001.

A bench comprising Justices P. K. Mishra and R. Banumathi announced the verdict on Rajagopal and six others in response to an appeal filed by the government to enhance on punishment for the accused in the case.

Rajagopal was earlier sentenced to 10 years imprisonment by a local court.

Chennai, Mar 18 : Self-help groups (SHGs) in Tamil Nadu are helping rural women become self-reliant by opening new employment avenues.

With help from the State and Central Governments, women residing in Krishnagiri District in Tamil Nadu have set up cottage industries to make various items ranging from soft toys to beautiful accessories.

Workers involved with the SHGs are earning a decent sum for their livelihood.
