Indian Kashmir tense as two killed in protests over shrine land

Srinagar, Kashmir - Army troops marched through the streets in India's northern Jammu and Kashmir state on Saturday after violent protests over land for a Hindu pilgrimage site claimed two lives and wounded 21 people, officials said.

The army was deployed in the southern Jammu district after Hindu protestors attacked government offices and torched a police station on Friday. Two protestors were killed in police shooting and 8 injured as the protests spread to Samba town, police said.

Jammu, a Hindu majority region in the mostly Muslim state has been on the boil since the state government cancelled its earlier order allotting 40 hectares of forest land to a trust that organizes the annual pilgrimage to the Amarnath cave.

Pakistan again violates ceasefire at LoC

Srinagar, July 30 : Pakistani troops again fired at Indian forces at the Nariya Post in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara Sector on Wednesday, violating the ceasefire agreed between the two countries along the Line of Control (LoC).

According to Defence Ministry sources, the firing started at 11:45 A. M. today and is reported to be still on.

The Indian side has not retaliated so far.

The fresh firing comes just a day after a flag meeting was held between Indian and Pakistani defence officials to ease the simmering border tensions.

On Monday, around 15 Pakistani soldiers had crossed over to the Indian side in the Nowgam Sector of Jammu and Kashmir in violation of the 2003 ceasefire announced by the two neighbours.

Jammu and Kashmir Government extends date for filing tax return by dealers

Jammu & KashmirSrinagar, July 30 : In a respite to traders of Jammu and Kashmir, the State Government today ordered amendment of Rule 28 of the State''s Value Added Tax (VAT).

Which will in result extend the date for filing of returns by dealers not exceeding 30 days from the due date in the wake of extraordinary circumstances.

According to an official spokesman, the government has decided to extend the date of filing of returns by the dealers for the first quarter of the year 2008-09 by a period of
30 days.

India, Pakistan firing on Kashmir border ends; soldier's body found

SrinagarJammu and Kashmir, Kashmir - Fierce clashes between Indian and Pakistani troops along the volatile Kashmir border stopped Tuesday and the body of an Indian soldier killed in the violence was recovered, Indian officials said.

The firing began on late Monday afternoon after 12 Pakistani soldiers crossed the Line of Control (LoC) dividing the disputed region and shot dead an Indian soldier in the Nowgam sector.
