Fifth phase of polling underway in Kashmir

Srinagar, Dec 13 : Fifth-phase of polling is going on in Jammu and Kashmir today.

Polling is being held in eleven constituencies in the districts of Kathua, Shopian and Pulwama. The 11 constituencies are Tral, Pampore, Pulwama and Rajpora in Pulwama district, Wachi and Shopian in Shopian district and Bani, Basohli, Kathua, Billawar and Hiranagar in Kathua district.

Of the 179 contestants, there are five women in the fray, in the three districts of Pulwama, Shopian and Kathua districts. 58 independents are also in the ring in this phase of elections.

Among these constituencies, Shopian and Tral have the distinction of having the highest number of 21 contestants each in the electoral fray.

Early winter enhances demand for Kangris in Kashmir valley

The Kangris helps people to keep warm despite the electronic heating gadgets available in markets.

Kangri, which holds hot embers inside, is used as a portable heater during winter. The wicker basket with the coal embers is held within the folds of the long and loose pherans (traditional garment) during winter.

Farooq announces an anti-election march in Kashmir

SrinagarSrinagar, Dec 9 : Hurriyat Conference Chairman Mirwaiz Umer Farooq has said that the Kashmir issue needs to be solved in a political manner.

In resuming the campaign against elections in Jammu and Kashmir, Farooq said separatist leaders were being put under house arrest.

Mirwaiz was placed under house arrest since November 14 when he was scheduled to lead anti-election rally at Bandipora town in Kashmir.

Sonia Gandhi says India will not bow before terrorism

Sonia GandhiUri (Srinagar), Dec 3 : Congress president Sonia Gandhi today said that India will never bow before terrorism and will give a befitting reply.

Addressing a public meeting in border town of Uri, Gandhi said the country has taken several steps to have a friendly relationship with our neighbours.

“Terror has no religion and there will be no compromise with those who are against humanity and human values,” she added.

On the Kashmir issue, Gandhi said "we are ready for talks at any level within the framework of Constitution for the welfare of the people".

Sonia to address public meeting in Uri, Doda

Sonia to address public meeting in Uri, DodaSrinagar, Dec 3: Congress president Sonia Gandhi will arrive in Jammu and Kashmir today to address public meetings in border town of Uri and Doda.

The fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh phase of polls in the state will be held on December 7, 13, 17 and 24.

Electioneering has already intensified for the 18 Assembly seats in Baramulla, Budgam, Reasi and Udhampur districts where polling will be held on December 7.

Two phases of the seven-phased elections have been successfully concluded with the active participation of the people.
