J-K Highway re-opened for one-way traffic

SrinagarSrinagar, Jan 8 : The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, which was closed due to incessant snowfall, was re-opened today for one-way traffic.

According to transport authorities, the highway was closed due to incessant snowfall at Jawahar tunnel.

The strategic 300-kilometre-long National Highway is the Kashmir valley, only connection with rest of the country.

A large number of vehicles, truck and lorries carrying essential supplies and fruit in and out of the valley were allowed to move to their respective destinations.

Locals in Kashmir usher 2009 with prayers for peace and prosperity

2009.

Srinagar witnessed over two month-long agitation and violence over Amarnath land transfer row, which brought the life almost to standstill here. On the first day of the year, people prayed to the almighty for a peaceful year ahead.

PDP will be a responsible opposition, says Mufti Mohammad Sayeed

Mufti Mohammad SayeedSrinagar, Jan. 2 : Accepting people's mandate in the recently concluded elections, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, chief of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said that his party would play the role of a responsible opposition in the state.

"I assure the people that the PDP will fortify the mandate and safeguard their aspiration as a responsible opposition party," said Sayeed said.

He also said that the UPA government should not misconstrue large voter turnout as a solution of the Kashmir issue and demanded renewal of the resolve of the Kashmir resolution process.

Omar Abdullah''s leadership welcomed in Kashmir

Omar AbdullahSrinagar/Jammu, Dec 31 : People in Jammu and Kashmir by and large are optimistic about the new coalition government in the state to be headed by Omar Abdullah, chief of National Conference Party, in alliance with Congress party.

In Srinagar, residents expressed faith in Omar''s leadership saying he would surely work for the development of the region.

"We are sure he will work for the development of people and solve our problems. All the pending problems will be dealt by him," said Janak Singh, a resident.

Jammu and Kashmir Assembly polls result tomorrow

Jammu & KashmirSrinagar, Dec 27 : Counting of votes for the 87 assembly constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir will be held on Sunday.

The counting in all the constituencies will start at 9 a. m at 22 centres set up at district headquarters across the state.

Electoral fate of 1,353 candidates will be decided including former Chief Ministers Gulam Nabi Azad of Congress (Bhadarwal), Mufti Mohammad Sayeed of the People''s Democratic Party (PDP) (Anantnag) and National Conference''s (NC) Farooq Abdullah (Sonawar and Hazratbal), NC president Omar Abdullah (Ganderbal) and PDP''s Mehbooba Mufti (Wachi).
