Students protest over Sri Lankan issue in CoimbatoreCoimbatore, Jan 30 : Students in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu took to streets on Thursday demanding the government''s intervention to protect Tamils trapped in fighting between the Sri Lankan army and the Tiger rebels.

Over 2,000 students boycotted classes at the Government College in Coimbatore and raised slogans against the Central Government for not hearing the voice of the Tamil people.

Coconut farmers defy government ban on production of ''Toddy''Coimbatore, Jan 28 : Coconut and palm growers spearheaded an agitation in Tamil Nadu demanding the State Government to lift a ban on production and sale of ''Toddy'', a traditional drink of the state.

''Toddy'', a local drink extracted from either a coconut tree or a Palm tree flower has been banned in the state since 1987 for being an alcoholic drink.

The farmers want the government to exempt toddy from the list of alcohol products banned in the State.

Coimbatore plays host to vintage car show

Tamil NaduCoimbatore (Tamil Nadu), Jan. 3 : Hundreds of enthusiasts of automobiles gathered at the Vintage Car show held here on Saturday.

The unique event will last till January 17.

This has been hosted by the G. D. Naidu Charities Trust and on display are more than 25 vintage cars. A couple of these cars date back to 1909.

The car models exhibited include Rolls Royce, Mercedes Benz 170, Oldomobile, Morris Minor, Mini Minor, Ford, Plymouth, Studybaker, Buick, Caddilac, Austin, Hispano-Suiza that was owned by the Maharaja of Mysore, Gogo Mobile and Citroen - 2cv.

Coimbatore orphanage adopts 161 children

Tamilnadu MapCoimbatore, Dec 20 : An orphanage in Coimbatore adopted about 161 children, who are the victims of communal carnage in Kandhamal district Orissa.

Most of the victims who had arrived here had lost their houses, property and are without any means of livelihood. Many of the victims have not got over the trauma and some are still living with the fear that they would be killed.

"I have lost everything. I have nothing and anyhow we went to the relief camp. From there we have brought here," said Sambit Naik, a victim.

Coimbatore girl students hold a candlelight vigil for Mumbai terror victims

Coimbatore/New Delhi, Dec 16 : Female students gathered here to hold a candlelight vigil as tribute to victims of the recent militant attacks on Mumbai.

They sang songs communal harmony songs and called on the government to take steps to ensure the safety and security of all citizens.

"As we are youth and citizens of India, we expect a lot from the government. We expect that the government would introduce steps for better participation in our future lives also," said Vinithra, a student.

Meanwhile at another function hosted in New Delhi, yoga guru Baba Ramdev donated cheque of rupees five lakhs each to the family of the 18 security personnel who had lost their lives fighting militants in Mumbai.

Rice Intensification technology gaining popularity in IndiaCoimbatore, Dec 15 : Rice Intensification technology known as System of Rice Intensification (SRI) for having bigger yields with less seeds, water and fertilizers is gaining popularity in India.

Inaugurating a national symposium on "System of Rice Intensification in India - Policies, Institutions and Strategies for Scaling Up" at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, here recently, Norman Uphoff, a scientist from Cornell University of the United States, said that the SRI technology is being extended to several other crops besides rice in India.
