Papaya cultivation faces threat from ‘Mealy Bug’ pest in Tamil NaduCoimbatore, Dec. 15 : Papaya cultivation in Tamil Nadu is faced with a serious threat from a new kind of pest called ''Mealy Bug'' which has invaded the crop.

In India, Papaya is cultivated in 8000 hectares of area whereas in Tamil Nadu alone Papaya is cultivated in about 3000 hectares area.

The farmers have suffered losses due to the sudden outbreak of the pest, which has a high resistance to pesticides due to their waxy body surface.

From the early age of eight, Murugan had a deep and abiding and affection for these reptiles and used to fondly play with them. Twenty-five years later, his love for snakes grew even more and he even took to catching snakes wherever he found them.

Holding photographs and banners of slain LTTE chief V. Prabhakaran, scores of protestors from various Tamil organizations gathered in Coimbatore city and staged a protest against the Sri Lankan government.

The protestors also tried to commemorate November 27 as the first ''Heroes Day'' following the death of Prabhakaran, before the police personnel prevented them.

"I made it clear any deviation in the lower level after the policy decision, which was taken by the government, to show favouritism to a specific company by a lower level officer, it will be dealt with," Raja said on the sidelines of a function here on Saturday. Raja added that the spectrum allotment was made under the regulator''s guidelines.

 Coimbatore hosts national chess tournament for visually impairedCoimbatore, Oct. 24 : The first All India Open Chess Tournament for the visually impaired kicked off in Coimbatore on Saturday.

Over 200 players from 21 states are participating in the five-day national chess tournament for blind.

The tournament will have nine rounds and will be played under the Swiss league system and under FIDE (an international chess organisation).

Vaishali Salavkar, a gold medallist in international chess Olympiad, Greece, is also participating in the tournament.
