Coimbatore, Dec. 15 : Papaya cultivation in Tamil Nadu is faced with a serious threat from a new kind of pest called ''Mealy Bug'' which has invaded the crop.
In India, Papaya is cultivated in 8000 hectares of area whereas in Tamil Nadu alone Papaya is cultivated in about 3000 hectares area.
The farmers have suffered losses due to the sudden outbreak of the pest, which has a high resistance to pesticides due to their waxy body surface.

Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu), Nov 28 : The Police here on Friday arrested more than 20 Tamil activists, who were protesting for a separate state for the Tamilians displaced by the war in Sri Lanka.
Holding photographs and banners of slain LTTE chief V. Prabhakaran, scores of protestors from various Tamil organizations gathered in Coimbatore city and staged a protest against the Sri Lankan government.
The protestors also tried to commemorate November 27 as the first ''Heroes Day'' following the death of Prabhakaran, before the police personnel prevented them.

The activists also protested against Union Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh, who has reportedly given the green signal to Kerala Government to conduct a survey for a new dam across the river.

Coimbatore, Oct. 24 : The first All India Open Chess Tournament for the visually impaired kicked off in Coimbatore on Saturday.
Over 200 players from 21 states are participating in the five-day national chess tournament for blind.
The tournament will have nine rounds and will be played under the Swiss league system and under FIDE (an international chess organisation).
Vaishali Salavkar, a gold medallist in international chess Olympiad, Greece, is also participating in the tournament.

Coimbatore, Oct 16 : Following the failure of two rounds of talks between National Textile Corporation (NTC) workers’ union and management over Diwali bonus issue, the striking workers have sought Government intervention.
Striking workers have been demanding that bonus should be calculated according to the percentage of their total earnings.
The workers and management had previously met on October 12 and October 14 in presence of the Labour Joint Commissioner of Chennai, but none of the talks were successful.

Coimbatore, July 10 : An elephant that trespassed onto agricultural lands, was found dead at a village near Narasipuram in Coimbatore on Thursday.
According to villagers, the elephant was aged around 40 years and might have hit a high-tension (HT) electricity pole or come into contact with the wire.
The Narasipuram Forest Range office has been informed of the incident.
Forest warden Doraiswamy said the pachyderm was a victim of electrocution.

Coimbatore, June 20 : Two swine flu cases have been successfully cured in Coimbatore, according to medical authorities here.
Dean of Coimbatore Medical College hospital, Dr Kumaran, on Saturday said they were the only two confirmed swine cases in the city.
"In Tamil Nadu, only two cases have been confirmed in Coimbatore. The two cases have been already treated and sent home after cure," said Dr Kumaran.
