Tampons successfully Tested to Determine Water Contamination

Researchers of a new study affirmed that tampons can also be used to identify the pollution areas in rivers and streams. Study researchers have talked about the waste water that has come from baths, sinks, washing machines and showers.

Using tampons, the study researchers were able to absorb chemicals that are present in toilet papers, shampoos and laundry detergents. Study’s lead researcher Professor David Lerner from the University of Sheffield, said, “More than a million homes have their waste water incorrectly connected into the surface water network, which means their sewage is being discharged into a river, rather than going to a treatment plant”.

Astrophysicists claim that Tatooine-like planets might exist

More than 1,000 extrasolar planets have been identified by NASA’s Kepler space telescope, out of which a handful of them orbit binary star systems.

Although numerous of them are the gas giants the size of gas giants like Neptune, one class of planet that appears to be missing so far is a small rocky world in a binary star system, a real life Tatooine from Star Wars.

To have a real-life Tatooine, a small rocky planet is required to form in the habitable zone of a binary system. However, the only planets that have been detected in binary systems so far are gas giants, and many of them are far outside the habitable zone of their parent stars.

Human Birth Control chemicals may cause low fertility in Fishes

It's not only the people who can take a pill and avoid having babies, as a new government report has shown that the hormones in birth control and a common plastics component can impact the fertility of fish also.

The research, conducted by the US Geological Survey, was published in the journal Scientific Reports. It has found that fish embryos exposure to 'estrogenic chemicals' in a laboratory setting can later lead to 'a note worthy reduction in the fertilization rate in offspring two generations'.

After three generations, the researchers wrote that they also saw a reduction of embryo survival in offspring.

The study authors wrote, "These adverse outcomes may have negative impacts on populations of fish inhabiting contaminated aquatic environments".

Iron supplements not necessary for pregnant women: Research

Many women use iron supplements. But, the US Preventive Services Task Force (UPSTF) has released two new draft recommendations that have shown that taking iron supplements during pregnancy doesn't have any significant health outcomes for either the mom or her baby.

The second review data has found no evidence of any improvement in growth or development due to iron supplements. This is a part of a UPSTF review of the latest research done on iron supplementation and screening for pregnant women, babies and young children.

Galaxy Cluster Candidates give hints regarding cosmic history

According to a press release from ESA, since the Big Bang, galaxies have gathered in tens or even thousands in the 13.8 billion years.

According to a press release from the University of Arizona, Brenda L. Frye, an assistant astronomer at the University of Arizona's Steward Observatory said, "Because we are looking so far back in time, and because the the universe is assumed to be homogenous in all directions, we think it's very similar to looking at the equivalent of what a baby cluster might look like".
