Electric Eel bends Body to double its Shock Value

A study has revealed that electric eel has a secret weapon to supercharge its electric shock. The electric fish bends its body around prey to double the voltage of its shock, according to the study published in the journal Current Biology on Wednesday.

Electric eel not only uses its secret electrocution techniques to immobilize prey, but also to defend itself. The creature’s powerful shock can even incapacitate a very large fish, the study suggested.

Kenneth C. Catania, biology professor at Vanderbilt University in Nashville and lead author of the study, said it was exciting to know that there is a creature that has been studied for many years, but its unique ability was still unknown until it was observed closely.

National Guard Blackhawk Helicopter airlifts Dinosaur Fossils out of Wilderness

Discovering a few remains of dinosaurs is an ordinary thing, but digging out full skeletal is a rare and exciting discovery. Earlier, researchers unearthed full skeletal remains of a baby Pentaceratops, which is believed to be a plant-eating dinosaur that lived millions of years ago in North America.

Paleontologists from the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science focused their attention on the fossils in 2011 during a trek in northwestern New Mexico’s Bisti Wilderness. The discovery was exciting, but to study the fossils closely, it was necessary to excavate them carefully and bring them to the museum.

New Discovery of Fossil Changes previous Theories on Evolution of All Great Apes

Researchers have unearthed a fragmented skeleton in Spain which may force them to reconsider their theories on ancestors of all great apes and humans. According to the researchers, the remains belong to new genus and species, Pliobates cataloniae.

The species described in the journal Science suggested that common ancestor of gorillas, gibbons and humans looked more like gibbon that earlier thought. The researchers from Catalan Institute of Paleontology Miquel Crusafont believe that monkeys from Old World and apes split off about 25 million years ago. After that, the Old World apes split off in great apes and gibbons.
